Lions Star Aidan Hutchinson Told to Reject Contract Extension

Timing will be everything when it comes to Aidan Hutchinson contract extension

Mike Payton and Brad Berreman offering their opinions, which are sure to be unpopular with Lions fans.

Dumb, total speculation.

Brad hasn’t been shown to low-ball guys, and Hutch just experienced how easy it is to get injured. It’s not impossible that either side could act unexpectedly, but the authors are just throwing shit at the wall.

Odds are that Aiden will get a huge contract offer (which he deserves) and will accept. But that doesn’t make for a clickworthy story.

Unless there’s reporting that his representation is advising him, this headline is shit like the rest of heavy’s content.

What they say makes sense, what they are not saying is where risk for Hutch comes into play.

Signing a large contract now offers generational wealth. Not as much wealth IF everything goes right for Hutch in 25.

Alim is a great example of a player who left a few $$ on the table for signing early, then tore his ACL before becoming a FA. We will never know what a DT with a torn ACL would bring as a FA, but it would not be as much as he is making now.

Who knows what the future holds for Hutch? His play is all out, all the time, could he end up on IR again in 25? I hope not, but all things are possible playing in the NFL.
There is logic in giving up a few $$ now, for a fair deal that sets you up for life.

I think he’s planning on signing a contract sooner than later. Kind of why he doesn’t see Myles Garrett as an option when Aiden expects to be paid….

Coming out of rehabbing a nasty injury, combined with greed not being his primary motivation, I don’t see Hutch turning down a market value deal with the Lions. I could totally see it if the team wasn’t competitive, let alone on the doorstep of SB contention. But he is in the right place, at the right time. A deal gets done.

He would be foolish IMO to not take a 28-30M per year 4-5 year extension. First off that seals up any life time money issues. Second he is going to make boat loads in the Detroit area off his marketing appeal. Just get it done and eliminate that distraction.

You are talking relative peanuts when you look at the long term. Sure 2M more on a 5 year deal is 10M. But we are talking 10M on a 150M deal. Also he knows the market will go up. But also he needs more dawgs to win. And I think he is smart enough to know that pigs get fat and hogs get slaughtered.

I just think the benefits to himself and his brand far outweigh trying to time the market.

Not sure I’d trust either guys opinion or informaiton.

One guy I’m not worried about is Hutch, the deal will get done, it will be top of the market and it will be fair. Could be this year, could be next year. I’d bet this summer.

Oh well. We’ll have Maxx Crosby and Myles Garrett so who cares.

Unlike a torn ACL or Achilles, this isn’t the type of injury which should have a long-term effect, nor does it make him more susceptible to injuries.

Michigan guy will probably stay in Michigan.

If we trade for Garrett or Crosby (which I don’t expect at all) that would only reduce Hutch’s leverage. I suspect the deal will be done sooner rather than later.

These guys know nothing about Brad Holmes. He takes care of his guys so Hutch will get a top of the market offer, no way is Brad low balling him due to an injury that he’s already almost fully recovered from.

Isn’t he under contract through the 2026 season? What’s the rush? I’d take a peek at him post injury before I throw 200m at him.

I would agree except…

had aiden stayed healthy I don’t think we offer him a huge contract.

But a leg injury? Brad is backing up the brinks truck for that.

Being “Told” would infer that Aidan Hutchinson reads or gives a single solitary shit what two “writers” post on their blogs. Do they have evidence of that?

Exactly!
Brad has No Problem paying HIS Guys Market Making contracts when they deserve it.
Penei, ARSB, Goff, Alim, Decker, DeMo.
At the time of each signing many say he overpaid, until other players immediately got bigger contracts in the weeks that followed.

Hutch will have to take a physical before the extension is final, but Holmes is not going to handle his extensions like Jerry and the Cowboys.
He knows he is going to extend Hutch, delaying only raises the cost, creates bad feelings and drama into the locker room.
Extending Hutch now with a top of the market deal is only a $35M AAV contract.
It would probably be $42M after the 2026 season following extensions / new contracts of Hendrickson, Parsons, Garrett, Crosby, and Watt.
I suspect Holmes will get in front of those guys and get an extension done prior to the draft as he did with Penei last year.
He can accept the 5th year option and roll a 4 year extension on after that keeping Hutch a Lion through 2030.

So they’d have hutch and Garrett likely only costing them 28m against next years cap and likely 40ish in 2026. Very doable. I’m just saying, it’s definitely not an impossibility. Then we have most of our big ticket guys wrapped up long term, with plenty to spare as the cap goes up a shopping 75M over the next 3 years

Yup, sounds like a mike payton article.

The best thing about drafting guys like Hutch, Sewell, Gibbs, Campbell, etc is that they love football and are culture guys. They’re loyal (you know how important that is to me) and aren’t going to play the numbers game. They want to be here and management/coaches wants them here… That makes everything else so much easier.

Thank god he blocked me long ago and I can’t read his stuff unless I go to the website, which is surely never going to happen.
