Lions Stars Throw a Bit of Shade at Ben Johnson Reusing Detroit Plays

We had this issue with Joe Lombardi. Teams simply watched Saints film to see what we were going to do.

Should help our defense

Nobody knows our (Ben Johnson) offense, like our defense.
It’s bad news for the Bears that they play us week 2. After that, our defense will have shown the league how to beat them.
Shep has to be salivating.

Okay, Ben is not stupid. I’m no longer a fan of his, but he’s not so thick as to just install his Lions playbook in CHI.

The more likely scenario is that he wants the league to think his CHI offense will mirror what was done last year. So, opponents (at least out of the gate) will be studying and prepping based on last year’s film. That’s what he wants. But what he does in CHI will be different enough to cause plenty of confusion for DCs. If not, then he is most definitely not the boy wonder everyone thought he was.

Found out in a subsequent article that Ben Johnson was using the same “preseason playbook” as the Lions for player evaluation purposes, but they weren’t running their regular offense during the preseason games.

One thing that does worry me though. Ben Johnson is very very good of designing multiple players off of one look.

I have a feeling he’s going to use that to his advantage. “Oh i used this formation for this play in Detroit, im gonna switch it to this play off the same formation to beat em.”

Caleb williams is a completely different QB. He’s shown in the preseason and last season that he is really only comfortable passing out of the shotgun. The bears will either need to be more predictable by running when under center OR they will allow caleb to constantly roll out and scramble for yards because it’s what he’s best at until he can get more practice and comfort.

With the Lions, Johnson could run whatever he wanted for whatever opponent. For the bears, they are going to have half the options.

Put differently, I think that Caleb will be ~25% less efficient than Goff because he can’t run as much stuff, he won’t have the same completion and accuracy and 3rd down efficiency. He will however extend plays a bit more and run for more. So while he won’t be as good as Goff overall, he also will have a lot of successful plays and TD unless Ben tries to force CW to play in a way he’s not ready for.

Well to be fair I’m not sure if any of these plays were invented by the Lions? Even the trick plays were copied….one from something they saw in a HS game.

I’ll also add I watched both interviews and didn’t think anyone was taking shots at the other.
