Surprised he never got another shot at HC. My guess, no one likes him.
He is an outstanding defensive coordinator since his days at Tennessee, however, I think he has a Jim Harbaugh aura about him to where 4 -5 years is about all one can take. I don’t think he wants to be a hc again, but could be wrong
Shwartz is a great defensive coordinator - he also seems to have matured a lot since his days as HC here. He probably deserves another HC shot if he wants it.
That’s not it. He’s a well respected coach.
I’ve met him and had the opportunity to have a lengthy private one on one conversation with him when he was the head coach of the Lions. He’s not at all what I thought he was. He’s not cocky at all. He’s actually a pretty cool dude.
He went to Georgetown and it shows. He has that yuppie, smug vibe about him. But he doesn’t rub it in your face. Nonetheless his demeanor comes across like he is better than you.
He has some health issue and turned down some coaching opportunities. That didn’t sit well with some organizations.
But I think he’s not getting HC opportunities for 3 main reasons.
-
When he was at DET him and Mayhew did not get along. He didn’t handle the situation well. It came out in public. Add in the handshake deal and some think he’s too confrontational.
-
He’s a fiery coach and today’s NFL tends to shy away from Fiery personalities for HC.
-
He’s a defensive minded coach with no experience coaching offense. Today’s NFL leans heavily towards offensive minded coaches.
Schwartz wants to return to being a HC but I don’t think he will get that opportunity in the NFL. He’s better suited for college in that regard. His best bet would be to take a HC gig at a big named college school. Win there and maybe then someone would give him another chance.
Thanks, the info. I’m sure he’s respected, but networking and friendships are important. Some people just aren’t very nice. I’ll take your word for it.
