Jim is a good guy. I met him several times. We went to dinner once and he came to my office and sat down and talked football with me. He was there for something work related but he still stuck around an hour and talked Lions.
Jim came off on TV far different than he actually was. He’s a cool dude. A bit of a preppy type. I mean he owned brand name stuff like a Boston Whaler and drove a Beamer because status meant something to him.
But Mayhew and him were not getting along. Mayhew forced players on him that he didn’t want and really didn’t listen to him. At first they did were on the same page but by year 3 they were not. Mayhew was listening to Milllen and Millen was telling Marty that if he had it to do over he wouldn’t listen to anyone else and do whatever he wanted. So Martin did.
So a lot of the temperament that came out like the Harbaugh situation and the part where Jim went off on the media about not coaching scared. That was aimed at Martin…. That’s why everyone was confused because no one accused him of coaching scared. Martin did…
What people don’t know is that the Ford Family liked Jim too. When Marty wanted him fired the Fords told Marty “we will give you one more hire if that’s what you really want but it will be your last one so make it count.” Then when Martin started to have the same issues with Caldwell they fired him.
My point in telling you all of this is that I believe the reason the Lions regressed after 2011 all fell on Martin.
Then Jim had the same issues with him.
Enter in Matt Patricia - who deserves all the hate he can get. That guy was an ass.
But what everyone should realize is the reason Sheila and Rod chose to have decisions made by committee approach this time around was because of the front office frictions cause by Martin and Matt.
