Matthew Stafford, Puka Necua, and the rest of the league

What does volume stats even mean? He’s had to put the team on his back like he usually does. The guy is an absolute stud and one of the most underrated QBs of all time. If you watch rams games, they are absolutely vanilla and boring under script. They become pretty much unstoppable when Stafford goes “backyard” from the gun. Taking the ball out of his hands at the end of the game literally cost them in both regulation and OT. McVay might be a good coach, but he’s an overrated offensive mind. The Rams are at their best when it’s in Staffords hands and it’s not even close.

volume stats…like how else does one put up the most passing yards in the league? The hate will always be here for this guy and it’s crazy. If DC came along in the beginning of Matt’s career here, we win multiple Superbowls.

edit

Completion percentage just doesn’t matter in a comparison of Stafford to Goff. Goff is amazing and elite on script. The offensive design is genius and damn near flawless. Goff is really really good, but straight competition percentage isn’t apples to apples here.

The hate? I love the dude and have his jersey… he was the chosen one for me man and I will never hate the guy. I just dont root for his team success… with that said, pretty self explanatory to me that when I say volume stats I mean the stats that look good given a “larger volume” of attempts… like yards and completions mostly.

When we say he is “statistically head and shoulders” above the rest of the qbs.. my point was god I hope a great qb like him is way up in yards and completions given he has played an additional game and has significantly more attempts than most qbs in the league (as of today). This was a statistical conversation afterall so shouldn’t context matter? Isn’t that we have metrics, like yards per attempt and yards per game, to make more informed observations vs quoting raw yardage numbers?

Not disparaging him at all for that he is doing what he has to do to carry the rams. Doesnt mean I wont reference how perhaps some numbers are inflated when compared to more balanced offenses?

Edit** context, I work in tech as a SR TPM my brain is always trying to contextualize data. Meant no offense to you or Mr. Stafford. Tell him he will always have a special place in my heart please :folded_hands:

Oh and I called McVay a jackass in the game thread for this very reason but I’m a hater of staffords

It’s crazy that Stafford basically led 4 game winning drives in 2 games that they lost. 2 blocked fgs a fumble at the 1 and a blocked pat. They really aren’t helping him out much.

There does seem to be a lot of hate for Stafford in this forum. Not pointing fingers. I think people are protective over Jared Goff which is unnecessary.

IMVHO, Matthew Stafford is the greatest Lions QB of all-time. He is a generational talent. No one has an arm like him. No one. Not to mention the IQ and the toughness. Nothing was more frustrating than how underrated he was because he played for the Lions. I couldn’t even put into words how happy i was when in his first season he won the superbowl with the Rams. He is top 5 to me and right now he is #1.The Rams are contenders again. They just need to clean some stuff up. McVay admitted he blew the last play call. I will always cheer for Stafford as long as he’s not playing against us. He is the reason why the Lions ever did anything.

That being said, this doesn’t mean we don’t love and appreciate Goff for his success here. So, I think people need to chill.

I also talked about other players and teams. This wasn’t meant to be a Stafford love/hate/Goff thread.

Absolutely and honestly I should have known that if I used Goff to explain differences in statistics but why should I have to disregard Goff when talking about quarterbacks because people will think it’s a shot or hate of Stafford… they are different guys and play the game differently. Right now stafford IS the rams offense pretty much and it is crazy impressive.

Again he has also played an extra game and has a significantly higher amount of attempts. Its a fact not a shot :man_shrugging:

As for the other players and comments of your post I feel they are pretty spot on so didn’t really have much else to add. With Stafford it was just the context around higher amounts of volume (games and attempts) equal more yards especially if the guy is a top 5/10 guy which Stafford certainly is

I get it, and I said I am not pointing fingers because I didn’t want you thinking it was you  . I already apologized for assuming. But people do when you look at other replies and people as a whole in this forum. Yeah, comparing Goff opens up a can of worms :joy:

Oh it was moreso just providing clarity for others that want to turn it that way that it wasn’t my intent. Just wanted to use our current guy as an explanation for how stats differ because they both have been amazing in their own ways but it leads to different efficiency or style of offense conversations.. and guess what, that is 100% okay when talking about current great players.

I took no personal offense in any of anyone’s remarks.

I didn’t mention his statistics in any way shape or form. Simply the comment of volume being the reason for his success (or that’s at least how it came off as other posters responded the same). I’m well aware that he has a game up on every QB in the league…

My hate comment also wasn’t meant to be directly pointed and you but the board in general.

But if you are being honest your comment does come off as an “excuse” or “reason why” Stafford is having the year he’s having. “Volume” or not, or whatever word you might want to use, it doesn’t matter. He’s probably been the best QB in 2025.

one person in this thread referenced 400 or 500 Yards above the rest. I would say 98% of the board knows why that is. He’s gonna be the leader after everyone plays game 5 also. So will volume still be the reason? Of course not.

all good brotha…I guess I come off strong. Stafford is obviously my dude

Again it’s not intended to be an explanation as to why he has the stats he has. You did that when you said that he is carrying the Rams and I agree 100%.

Not sure how pointing out that the guy has 1 more game played and double the attempts that Lamar has for example and maybe that leads to a higher yardage number is controversial, it’s kinda just how it works. Thing is it isnt alone a positive or negative indicator of performance especially when they are in significantly different situations and schemes.

2016 was a great example of my point as the original post emphasized yardage and mvp. Well Brees easily won on yardage and was incredible, Matt Ryan had significantly less attempts and thus higher efficiency numbers. Both were imperative to their team’s success and played in significantly different systems.

Matt Ryan won MVP, didn’t mean he was better than Brees

As much time as it takes to realize what many others have concluded; Justin Fields is just good enough to get you fired. He is a tick slow on everything. He cannot execute at the QB position well enough to win games. Either AG thinks otherwise or he and Rick Spielman and their brass are counting on losing most of their games in order to draft a QB in 2026.

The guy is a nightmare to play against, but has never been good enough. Otherwise he wouldn’t be bouncing around so much from team to team. I think they got him on a two year prove it deal. He has a great connection with Wilson who’s be fantastic. But if they keep losing I can’t image them not drafting a QB. I think it will take time to build that culture. Brining in the type of players AG wants. Same build DC has done here.

Stafford has been efficient though. It isn’t just throwing for 400 yards and 3 TD’s. Which is nuts. Also, the players below him are Dak and Daniel Jones. He’s so far above the “great” QB’s. Plus Dak and Jones would need 400-500 yards their next game just to try to catch up.

Yes he has been efficient and while he has been amazing the last two games represent half of the yardage and he has significantly more pass attempts than the other great qbs because his offense and team needs him to.

BTW he is 1-1 in those last two because his coach made a jackass of a decision. Add in that he has played 5 games and I’m sorry that I don’t think that we should be talking about a 500 passing yards lead for Stafford without the additional context of how it got there?

Guy has been fantastic, it is also true that often with higher volume comes higher stats especially on pure volume metrics like yards. Not sure how else to say it, even the Brees and Ryan example which perfectly illustrates how the most yards doesn’t always equal nfl mvp as there is the context behind it with the scheme, efficiency metrics, and how the team needs to play/performs. He is and will be a top pick for mvp just saying maybe we shouldn’t create the trophy with his name just yet 4/5 games into 2025?

Great discussion points

IMO Travis Hunter has bust written all over him mostly because of his size. The NFL is a man’s game and the question for him has been can his body take that beating. He came out of college after playing FCS and at Colorado. This is the first time in his life he has played with dudes that have the same speed and athletic ability across the board. This comment is also for Sheadur (sp?).

Goff is more accurate and has higher IQ than Stafford. Stafford has a better arm and is more creative at times (hence his INTs). And I am not saying Stafford has low football IQ just that Goffs is slightly higher. Both are top 10 QBs and both will press to get into the HOF. I would take either and be happy. I tend to prefer the Goff style but I have always appreciate the QBs who can absolutely jam it into stupid small windows like Stafford.

You are dealing from the top of the deck with both guys. And both are tough and loved by teammates and great leaders. Again I can understand how someone might prefer one over the other but neither is bad.

Not to beat a dead horse here lol…but one person mentioned that he’s 4-500 yards above everyone else. Everyone here knows and understands that it’s due to him playing one more game. The guy who posted probably even knew he just used it as a metric to prove his point (whatever it was). I mean it’s week 5 and it’s not Sunday yet…it’s not like it’s week 13 and Staffords bye is 14.

So does this mean that the offseason threads that Stafford is done and should probably retire were incorrect?
