Mike Clay's Offseason Roster Rankings: Lions #2

Lots to chew on here. The Lions defensive ranking a bit surprising. Bears OL ranked better than the Lions.

I think they’re vastly improved, but better than us with those tackles? I don’t think so.

I believe defensive lines would rather play their line and not ours. I believe we are absolute thugs and dirtbags that are going to beat the hell out of those we line up against and the week after is going to suck.

I acknowledge that they have vastly improved. I have zero belief that they have surpassed us.

Thuney is a monster upgrade and better than any guard we have, but we have them beat at every other position. Dahlman’s good, but he isn’t as good as Frank. Their tackles aren’t better than ours, and Jonah stinks. I really can’t understand the ranking.

All four NFCN teams in the top 10.

Will this be like last year, when it became a joke as the North teams mostly fell on their faces?

I sure hope the other teams in the division are overrated, because combined with the rest of the schedule… yikes.

The NFCN will look great!
…when they’re not playing against us.

Coach Dan has our guys waiting on their front porch.

While we do have one of the best tackle duos in the NFL and a top 3 center, we have significant concerns at guard. Sure most of us believe in Mahogeny but the facts are he was a 6th round pick who played well in very limited opportunities. Sure, we expect Glasgow to rebound at his more natural RG position, with that said he was a below average starter last year. The rest of the group is relatively unproven.

I think we will be a consensus top 3 OL by week 8.

This is an odd take.

GG received pretty solid grades in most years of his career.

Ratledge- 2nd rounder we traded up to get

Mahogany- was a 3rd round grade guy who had some medical concerns. Appears to be fully healthy now. Had a 72 rating at LG and a 91 rating at RG….

Frazier was a stud in the SEC for years.

Not believing we have 2 good starters out of that lot is strange. I would be 80% of NFL teams would trade their guard situation for that crew.

The excuse that the Oline was the problem in Chicago still has 3.5 months of life.

Why did KC trade him for a 4th rounder?

He’s old, that’s about it. But…

Same reason they traded away Tyreek and Sneed and other excellent players, money. Thuney’s older and expensive and in balancing their roster, they decided they could spend that money elsewhere. 4th is actually great value for a guy like that.

Personally I think he’s the best OG in the league, but the Chiefs think they don’t need the best OG in the league with Mahomes, so they’re going young.

Surprised nobody is talking about the Lions defensive ranking. A bit overrated here? Or about right?

Putting any Oline that’s completely overhauled in front of the Lions is nonsense. Lions may only have one new starter in mahogany and he started a couple games last season. Then we went and drafted a couple guys who could push for playing time. Bears have a whole new offense and a bunch of guys who never took a snap together. It’s like guys playing years together at a high level doesn’t matter? I guess every free agent acquisition always work.

Let Ryan Poles cook!!!

Glasgow just had his worst year since he has been here and it’s turning 33 before the season. It’s very reasonable to be skeptical that he is a + starter this season.

Mahogany was a 6th round pick. Doesn’t matter where people thought he would go. It is very reasonable to question whether or not he will be a + starter is his 2nd season and 1st season starting.

Ratledge is a 2nd round rookie. He could do well, or he could struggle. I loved the pick and personally expect good things but it is perfectly reasonable to have some doubts that he is a + starter on day 1

Frazier was a late round pick. Great developmental player and also loves the pick. With that said, unlikely he makes a year 1 impact.

I am happy with what our guard situation looks like. From an outsiders perspective, we have some serious question marks at guard.

In most cases (like Frazier’s), I agree, but when it’s being spooked over an injury I think it’s different. The tape showed a guy who should have gone on day 2. His actual NFL reps showed the same thing. Personally I’m expecting him to be very good. Like top 10 OG in the league good. Yes, he’s somewhat unproven, but he’s still more proven than any draft pick that teams are counting on.

Considering Mahogany lost the majority of training camp and a ton of time early in the season, his play on the field was highly encouraging. I also have high expectations for him. With that said, most of us had high expectations of James Houston as well.

All the point I was making is, it’s completely understandable for people to be skeptical at our current situation at guard heading into the season.

Two things stood out for me - Jared’s 7 grade is just disrespectful; the D rating is too high. I mosdef expect a big leap, but #1? And the O drops back to #5? Why? Because of the movement at the OG spots?

So, according to Clay, the Lions have the WORST OL in the NFC Norris?
Hmmm, okay.

I think he’s got GB ranked below us. But yeah, Chicago and Minnesota are just above us.
