His performance has to throw some serious doubt into whether they offer him a giant contract or not. It will really get interesting if he flops in LA next week. If he turns out to be Jets Darnold and they saddle themselves with a $55 million bum it will set them back for half a decade. He played out of his mind this year. Maybe it was a career year, who knows? Interesting times in the state of 10,000 lakes.
Those putting Darnold ahead of Goff in the MVP race are looking quite foolish this morning. As are those who placed GB and Minny ahead of us in the power rankings. The Lions are on the front porch,.
Part of Darnolds problem was AG. Detroit had a good plan and got him uncomfortable. I don’t think one game were he was pressured constantly . Takes away from what he accomplished.
All of this could be true. It could also be true that he had a career year. If you Mouse, are in charge of the Minnesota Vikings, do you offer him a five-year $260 million contract? Get it wrong and you’ve likely sealed your fate as GM.
I actually read this as the state of 10,000 takes. Going to see if we are both right. Of note, I do think the Rams win next week.
Mouse: No I would tag him on a one year deal to see how it unfolds. But the guy went 14-3 and got beat by a really good team for the division.
I agree with your approach. Let it play out for a year and pay a slight premium for the “pleasure.” If he does it again, he will get paid. If not, a bullet was dodged.
He’ll go someplace else. MN will get a 3rd round comp pick. JJ will start next year with Jones as back-up. MN will save 50 million and be no worse off.
Except you have no idea if JJ will be good in the pros, or how he will be post injury.
I think the market for him will be soft. He was atrocious and exposed yesterday. If it happens next week, which I believe it will, then he will be way better off on the tag for a year and then letting things play out. At least he will parlay this awesome season into one great payday (that he may or may not even be starting in).
This seems like the clear route to take for the Vikings. Another prove it year with no long term commitment and allows McCarthy to develop and possibly take over the reigns in 2026. It’s really a win win for the Vikings to do this.
True.
But a third place schedule and several games were closer than you expect. Be curious to see how they fare against a much tougher schedule next season.
I think you either tag him or you, depending on the LA game, you offer a much smaller contract aav than 50m. 3yr deal for 120m, also lines up with JJ’s cheaper years.
