I feel this deserves its own post. I’ve been doing this for darn near three decades now and quite frankly, some of it gets pretty cliche. I’m going to kick this off with my own personal pet peeve.
“There’s No Way ______ will be there in the 2nd round!”
Really… Every year there are reaches in every round, and guys who were pegged to go in the 2nd end up going in the 5th. EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR. This is one of the most overused and pompous statements that gets bandied about incessantly. Now, of course, you won’t see Hutchinson in the 7th, I’m not blind to reality, but saying a guy projected at 20 won’t be there . Time to lighten up on the OCD portion of the program there Rain Man and let the spirit of Bob Marley in.
That’s my little Andy Rooney bit, let’s hear yours.
First one definitely doesn’t exist, but ppl reference it constantly.
Second one arguably doesn’t either. Pundits have no role in determining draft value. A players value is set by the front office willing to spend the most draft capital. Oops. If 30 teams value a player as a 7th round pick, and only two see a first round pick, then the two are correct. That player won’t be there in the seventh round.
This is kind of dumb, but i don’t love it when analysts say:
“You could trade down and draft “a Matt Corral” later”.
“You could take a CB earlier and find “a Drake Jackson” in the 2nd”
Etc
I don’t know why they say “a (insert player name)”, instead of just the player’s name. That’s typically how we might talk about an object, not a person. To be clear, this isn’t about any politically motivated concepts or anything at all like that, it’s just that i think it’s kind of odd in general.
They did it again in 2021. There was a certain flow to the picks and the coverage of the next pick until the Dolphins took Jaylen Waddle. Then they spent the entire time the Lions were on the clock talking about Waddle until the Panthers pick was announced.
Here is a condensed version of the first 10 picks. Waddle gets drafted around the 17:30 mark. Notice around the 19:00 mark when Waddle is shown hugging the commish, the Lions pick has already been made and the Panthers are on the clock. Then they keep talking about Waddle until the Panthers pick is made. Right at the 21:00 mark is what we have grown accustomed to. They talked about Waddle all the way up to the commercial break, then it skips forward to when they came back from commercial break and said “oh by the way the Lions took Penei Sewell” and moved on to the Panthers, Broncos, etc.
The condensed version reflects what happened in the extended version, watching it live. They used up the time on the clock during the Lions pick to keep talking about Waddle. Then announced the pick after the Panthers were already on the clock. Then quickly switched to talking about the next picks again.
It seems like almost every year there’s a generational talent coming out in the draft and it just seems like people don’t understand what the word “generational” means.
Also - this has nothing to do with the draft but I get the same feeling when people say “hot water heater”
I get that, but we only know what grade the Lions and the talking heads have that player. There may be ten teams that have Dizon a similar grade, making him not a reach.
We only know what you and I and Mel Kiper thought of a player, and none of us have relevant opinions. We don’t get to see the team grades of many or any of the 32 relevant graders.
