My ten year old asked me this what the most famous number was in all of sports and I went straight to 23 bc of MJ. Is that right? Is that just I’m a Gen Xer?

I think 23 is the right answer, 42 for Robinson is probably up there and maybe Kobe.
But I think Jordan is definitely the right answer

I will add 3 up there, for Babe Ruth and then Dale Earnhardt. I am tossing NASCAR a bone. Both are icons in their sport.

This has to be the right answer.
- The number was retired by an entire league.
- Every player in the league has to wear that number once per year all on the same day.
- A movie was made for that number with that number as it’s title.

I wouldn’t vote for 23, simply because jordan wasn’t always 23.
The first number that came to my mind, growing up in NJ was 7, Mickey Mantle.My grandfater loved him along with 3, the bambino.

99 is retired across the entire NHL… It also has cross sport HOFers like Warren Sapp, Jason Taylor, Dan Hampton, JJ Watt, Manny Ramirez, Ronaldo… Aaron Judge wears 99… 42 is largely famous bc of the racial implications, not bc the player that wore it was the best to ever do it
In American sports I’d say it’s 23. Canada is hockey so it’s 99 for Gretzky. For the rest of the world I’d say 10.

Also inspired a bunch of other people to wear 23 like LeBron, David Beckham, Joe Haden, etc.. Also Kobe switched to 24 because it was one more than Jordan’s 23, if you believe the rumors.

Michael Jordan was still in HS when that decision was made so I’m not sure that’s fair to MJ.
23 is the most famous sports # ever.
Hundreds of thousands of years of human history went into that decision, Mike did his best to sway it but the numbers are in! Or the number, anyway.
