Mouthpieces and concussions?

Do mouthpieces help against concussions?
If so, why doesn’t the NFL mandate that every player always wears a mouthpiece at all times?

If the NFL doesn’t want to pay for CTE’s and bad publicity, I think it’s something they should be considering.

What’s the negatives to making players wear mouthpieces? College still makes players wear mouthpieces, correct? Do college players get fewer concussions?..I’m asking, does anyone have any stats on this?

It’s harder to find JaMo on the field during pre snap if the mouthpiece isn’t dangling.

The NFL players association has negotiated a contract making mouthguard use optional. The mouthpieces aren’t mandatory, because the NFLPA – and really, the players – don’t want them.

Personally I don’t think they prevent concussions, but they sure as heck prevent you from biting down on your tongue during a big hit or smashing your teeth up. I think playing football without a mouth guard in is pretty stupid really. Jamo for example has a big ass mouth guard dangling off his helmet, but doesn’t use it. What’s the point of that?

My martial arts school requires mouthguards for sparring, supposedly to reduce the risk of a concussion if you get kicked in the head. I don’t think they can actually do that given what we know about concussions. They do keep you from smashing your teeth together, which is a good enough reason on its own IMO.
