Nate Lynn: How Does He Do That?

Lynn’s draft profile doesn’t scream anything, but he’s flashed and been discipline to my eye in both preseason camps and 3 preseason games. IMO, his 2nd half play merits a few snaps at the Miami scrimmages and starting the game next Saturday. Let Ahmed get a taste too.

It’s just a suggestion, Dan…

I think he should make the team. PUP Paschal and then figure it out four weeks in.

Oh, good! I lost his number before I could put it in my phone.

Big fan of PUP for Paschal & Wingo. I like playing the #s game early.

Fun fact, since @Thats2 gave us that zinger about Little & Bates college teammate.

Nate Lynn used to practice everyday against Colby Sorsdal.

Looks like we found out who is William and who is Mary

From what I saw both Lynn and sorsdal are improving. I thought sorsdal looked better than any point in his career so far. I’m not ready to pencil him in for the 53 but I am taking him out of the lost cause category for now.

Yeah with Frazier starting out on NFI, i think that opened a spot up for Sorsdal.

Manu, Kayode, Egkuban, Sorsdal, Skipper

Not a bad backup OL at all

We all knew that. Many just forgot.

The only way I think Holmes does that is if Cooper & Lynn are truly excelling in practice against the 1st team and in joint practices against good competition.
If Wingo and Paschal are healthy and ready Dan can’t have Holmes playing a “numbers game early” when there are two important division games and the Ravens in the first 4 weeks.
The Lions have to field the best team every week.
Many Practice Squad players have great preseason games against other Practice Squad players in August and are never heard from again.
Most remain Practice Squad players or at best elevate to become rotational players.
The Lions have a couple every year.
Tom Kennedy, Dylan Drummond, Daurice Fountain, Starling Thomas, etc.
Cooper & Lynn are new and exciting but unless they are having success against NFL lineman and can be trusted to know and execute the scheme, Dan will opt for healthy & trusted members of his 15-2 squad.

And you want to start the season with 2 dudes that are recovering from injury and haven’t practice at all or even gotten into game shape .

Cooper and Lynn are different scenarios IMO.

IMO Cooper has quite a bit of O’Connor overlap. I think they’d love to have 3 cheap higher upside years of that lined up after this year and there are a dearth of DL options league wide him getting poached is a risk. But I don’t see a path to him dressing up. We can slide Edges inside for some 3T juice until Wingo is back.

Lynn is differentiated IMO. He’s not the can crusher profile that we hang are hat on but instead a slippery and instinctive pass rusher. I just think that given where we are last year and the lack of that profile elsewhere on the roster we should think long and hard about keeping him with an open mind to a James Houston like DPR sort of role.

So pump the brakes? That is an option. But this is preseason and I always drain the brake fluid in mid-July. I’m begging Dan to give them more exposure to starters now. I’ll face reality in September. OK, that was a lie…

I agree and to my eye his run defense is responsible and adequate.

I’m optimistic that he’s a guy that can really work off other rushers in schemed up scenarios. In 2023 John Pius (who’s now at Wisconsin) and him really played well off of one another. Much lower level of competition but I think that ability to coordinate well with a teammate is to some extent an inherent trait.

If we keep 6 edge Lynn should make it.

If Bromart shows out again he will likely beat out Cooper for 5th DT

I’m curious to see where they play Frazier. I’m betting they try him at tackle first given our very shaky depth there.

You are saying to play the numbers game.
I’m saying to field the best team.
I said if Cooper and Lynn are playing at a high level then roster them and play them.
If they are rostered under a numbers game they will likely be at the end of the bench and probably be healthy scratches.
Wingo (and possibly Paschal) will likely be able to practice near the end of camp like Reader did last season and miss a game or two at most instead of 4.
When they play they will be full rotational players and not just taking roster spots.
