After 3 years of ‘he was a salary cap dump in the Stafford trade,’ we’ll hear the opposite. How he was ‘always talented, and just needed a fresh start.’ What if someone says… gasp… that McVay was ‘holding him back?’ If anyone finds that piece, they need to post it here pronto!
I think what makes it tough for them to endorse the lions long term will be the lack of one true star on this team. Many will emerge, but I don’t see them pumping Goff the way they will do for Mahomes or Rodgers. Or Saint, or JaMo, or even Aiden. Team football is crap marketing. They currently like a charismatic, long term staple leader of a team that is winning. Reminds me of the 2004 Pistons. A team that should have been so marketable with outstanding players, but no ONE better than the rest. Funny that they pump individuals over the team but that’s what sells.
WTG @StormGuyNovi. Enjoyed reading this well-reasoned take more than most sports-writers’ takes. Post of the month for sure.
While you nailed it…I think things CAN change. Remember when the Cowboys were labelled ‘America’s team’? I think part of that was that they were a perennial winner, picking up bandwagon fans, who then became permanent fans. Suddenly they travelled real well, and seemed to be everywhere. The NFL wanted to protect this.
Detroit is passionate about their sports. In hockey, the Red Wings were one of the best travelling teams for years and years, while they were putting together a 25 year streak of making the playoffs. This again might be happening right before our eyes. The number of Lion fans in KC and GB for our two road games was amazing. Brad and Dan are going to be here for the long haul and they surround themselves with elite coaching. It may not be long before we become a very popular team…with both players and casual, non-Detroit fans. If so, we may just be in for some Packer/Patriot/Cowboy style breaks. Maybe.
Love that Rich Eisen piece. So true. His take is exactly how I feel…paraphrased…
“JaMoss is coming & Gibby is nowhere near fully unwrapped.”
…Gentlemen…tip of the iceberg. We are capable of much better football, especially when fully healthy.
Answer to Sharpe’s “can they pick up where they left off?”…My answer came from Jerry Jacobs…“we locked out. We can’t play right now.”…juuuust dying to get back to it, with a sense of disappointment of how they left off.
I for one DO believe, and HAVE believed!
The year of the Lion is upon us, my brothers!
Skip’s segment → Love didn’t fold → Officials gave them FOUR first downs with penalties, ignored several terrible holding calls, called a fake hands to face, and gave them their best play by ignoring the game clock had expired.
Detroit >>>>>GB…by a LOT!
Michael Irving is much more close to my reality, but his take on their growth…I think they’re further ahead of where his take is.
Skip just kissing Love’s ass at every opportunity. HIs main focal point by a mile.
Great point, and it isn’t just Lions fans complaining. Following other boards last night, everyone was talking about how the refs just completely turned to GB in the 3rd quarter.
It was McVay. Supposedly the same reason he let Akers go. They were hitting on his wife, Veronika. However if that were true the whole team would be gone except good boy, Matty Stafford.
Nice.
I promised myself that I would only retire my silly, childish lion when my team actually earned it. I started collecting possible images a few months ago, but none thrill me. I may just keep it…its sort of grown on me after 10+ years. Any opinions?
Kirwin with big praise, also discusses the 0:00 play more than most in the media have.
He doubles down on the Lions draft class being equal to Seattle’s draft last year. Miller: when all is said done LaPorta will be the best TE out of IA.
Kirwin: Extend Goff now for 2 years. He does a great job helping young players contribute immediately.
