New kicker an QB for Lions Hooker is on 53

12/19

The Detroit Lions waive K Riley Patterson and activate QB Hendon Hooker from Reserve/NFI.

It’s sad that the Lions are where they are at the kicker position. The margins are razor thin between winning and losing and the Lions have ANOTHER weak legged kicker. Lions should’ve traded for Prater who could’ve been had for basically nothing. He leads the league from 50+ and has the longest FG this season.

Piss poor GM work by Holmes. No excuse for this.

You know what they say about assumptions?

Cardinals may not have been interested in trading Prater.

Prater may not have been interested in coming back to Detroit.

Prater doesn’t have a no trade clause and is a tremendous competitor. He would’ve came to Detroit as he wants to win and is a “money” kicker who loves to make big time kicks.

Rebuilding Cardinals would’ve taken a pick for him. Maybe had to pony up a 5 but would be worth it. This is just SOL bullshit. Even take a trade out of the equation Holmes has completely failed to get a real kicker here before season.

If you want to argue that Holmes should’ve tried to keep Prater in the first place, I’m with you on that.

But to say the Lions can go out and just acquire any player they want? That’s just fantasy/Madden football.

Teams do go acquire pretty much any player they want though. Look at Niners and Eagles. Do you think Howie Roseman would be sitting on his hands at deadline if Eagles had a kicking problem? Of course not. Acquiring an aging kicker really isn’t a big ask.

There was an article earlier this year about Prater where he was asked about being in ARZ, and he loves it because its where his wife’s family is and she grew up, she is a formel Cardinals cheerleader and Prater’s dad lives there now too.

Plus, the LS and ST coach are the guys he broke Tom Dempsey’s record with

He has other reasons that have been stronger than the motivatoons he used to have or people assign to him.

Thanks for sharing this.

Yeah? Really? His last season with us was his worst since 2009. He made 75% of his FG’s and missed 3 extra points. You don’t keep aging players whose productivity was pointing south. Good for him that he’s doing well now.

History still was on Praters side. Odds would say Prater would bounce back and of course he did. Let’s remove Prater from the equation it is awful GM work to not upgrade the Kicker position.

This just shows that Holmes has a long way to go if he wants hang with the big boys. Niners used a 3rd to draft a kicker with a massive leg and a bulldog mentality. Cowboys did real scouting work and got Aubrey from the USFL, Philly ponied up and signed their Kicker to a multi year deal in the offseason. What has Holmes done except for bring in weak legged kickers?

It’s awful GM work, puts the Lions at a major disadvantage. It’s inexcusable and lazy.

Actually those are the very words I would use to describe your post.

For 30 years, we had great kickers, and shit records.
Maybe Dan/Brad finally figured out what was really wrong here. Gotta sacrifice a good kicking game.
I’ll take it.

We haven’t lost any games this season because of the kicker. Patterson has only missed 2 FG’s this season and made one from beyond 50 at the Raiders. People were whining about the kicker situation before the season started, I get it. My list had quite a few other positions ahead of kicker, still do, and that won’t change before this season is over. Prater was what, 36 and struggling and the Lions paid him $3.8 his final season. They were in a rebuild. Taking cheap shots at Holmes over the move is just that, cheap shots that aren’t landing.

Agreed. Kicking is a ruthless position. Patterson hasn’t even been bad. He made most of his kicks.

Tough gig being a place kicker.

17-19 with 1 over 50, and missed 2 extra points.

So he missed 4 kicks out of roughly 50. Like I said ruthless position being a kicker when 46 out 50 gets you fired
