NFL analyst Orlovsky says Steelers 'bamboozled' everyone

Thought Justin Fields should’ve been named the starter over Wilson, but as the author notes, the veteran Wilson always held the inside track to the starting job.

I thought PIT made it very clear Wilson was the starter from the get go.

Yep, that’s exactly what I remember, not sure what Orlovsky is talking about.

I agree with @Air2theThrown, they did. I am not shocked that this is coming from Dan Orlovsky, the more that guy talks the more I lose interest in what he has to say. Pittsburgh has said Wilson would be the starter, and even people like Cowher have said Russell needs to be the starter, because Russell has the experience. If Wilson fails, you can then go to Fields. If you say Fields wins the job and he struggles, then go to Russell, then he falters, you can’t then go back to Fields and say he is the guy.

That’s ok because I don’t pay attention to Orlovsky anyway. Bad QB. Bad TV personality.

I 100% think JF was given the opportunity to win the job. He didn’t do it. Tomlinson got to see all the practice reps and didn’t think JF was the guy. DanO is crazy AF sometimes.

Fixed.

I’ve said it before I’ll say it again because I’m old and repeat myself a lot.

Fields is not a good QB. But he is an excellent ‘slash’ or wildcat QB. Like, terrifyingly so. I mean he did beat us, twice, in his career.

He is absolutely murder running the ball. he also has a strong arm you just kind of have to guess where it’ll end up. You do a few of those fake QB draw plays where he pulls up short and then throws the ball because EVERYONE is coming in to try and stop him.

I’d have loved him in detroit. for reals. He’s an incredible weapon with the ball. But not as the every down QB.

Agree 100%.

I do not think that was the case. Wilson was told he was the starter the moment he signed. Pit never wavered on that. It’s been Wilson’s job from the get go. Clearly Fields was planned to be the back-up.

Did Wilson ever throw a pass longer then 5 yards in the preseason ? I see Jeff Garcia all over again.

He did against us, had a longer pass to George Pickens. As it needs to be said, that was our 3rd and 4th string DBs.

Wilson can throw occasional bombs to the outside. He and Sutton did a lot of damage together. Wilson’s issue is he cannot and will not throw over the middle of the field. He takes wayyy to many sacks waiting for the outsides to open up and his old routine of turning every play into a scramble drill no longer works. Wilson doesn’t have the mobility he used to. Basically, every play either becomes a quick dumpoff pass behind the line of scrimmage, or he scrambles around hoping someone deep gets open.

I don’t know man, I think he literally fumbled away the opportunity. But you could be right.

I think both are true. I think Russ was starting the season as the starter. Like Air2 said, he was told that from the beginning, and that was before they traded for Fields. The Steelers know Russ’s age, so they were signing their QB of this year and could let Fields grow in to take over in the future.

I think if had Fields had a really good preseason, it would have accelerated the clock on Russ. Instead of him getting 6 games to show what he has left, he would maybe get 3. As you said, since Fields still cannot hold onto the ball, his fumbletastic preseason probably set the clock back at 6. Unless Russ looks absolutely terrible, which is exactly what I think will end up happening.

[Sharp] Some wild marks from Russell Wilson last year: He threw 27% of his passes behind the line of scrimmage which was #1 highest out of 509 QBs since 2005. He threw 62% of his passes within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage which was #2 highest out of 509 QBs since 2005…

Sean Payton had no confidence in Wilson’s intermediate passing…the 2023 Broncos had the least amount of intermediate passing of any offense since 2005.

Wilson threw just 26% of his passes between 5-15 yards downfield…#1 lowest out of 509 QBs since 2005.

It was nothing but record breaking rates of underneath passes and the occasional moon ball downfield. 509 QBs in sample with a min 300 att in a season.
