NFL.com Lions biggest needs

I was taking a look at NFL.com to look at team needs and I thought it was interesting what the NFL’s official website thought our biggest team needs are.

Do you agree and if not what do you think they are?

Also note that they had KC and DET at 31 and 32.

bring back Patrick and all set at WR

Pretty much accurate. When healthy none of them are crying needs, as Holmes has it pretty much covered. But adding talent to each of those areas is key.

I guess OT might rise to the top for me, seeing Decker’s decline. Manu is a huge question mark and it’s a bonus if he ever turns into starting material.

And then DT and Edge.

I guess it depends on who’s available. Holmes will trade up for one of his guys, we know that. But adding a few guys in the trenches on both sides seems to be the highest priority.

CB/WR can be addressed on day 3, assuming they decide to bring back CD and Patrick.

I think our first 2 rounds are O and D lines.

Heard and agree. However he’s getting up there in age and has a significant injury history. Getting a solid rookie to prepare to step into that role (or Jamo’s in the future if he can’t be re-signed) should be a priority.

Lajohntay Wester round 6

Khalif Raymond 2.0

Can’t argue with that list. One could suggest that same list for just about any team in the league.

That said, there is need on the O-line for sure. Start plugging away at replacements for OG and LT. (Or RT if they move Penei.)

I would think that this will be a “trench” heavy draft on both sides of the ball.

Then again, they don’t call him a villain for nothing…

Just don’t call him Maurice…or a space cowboy…

I think biggest needs in order for me
DL
OL

DB/WR

Summary first…
In order of need:
DE
CB
OG/C
WR
S
DT

Explanation:
Patrick is an important player to bring back, along with Zeitler and Skipper on offense. If they all are brought back, I’d still have WR and possibly G/C as a need.

Defense:
Even if you bring back Davenport and Commish, I’m still putting Edge high on my list of needs.
Depending on where the front office is on BroMart and Wingo, DT might be, too.
SAM should see Nowaske back at the least. If we can bring back both Barnes and Nowaske, I’m content at LB.
CB needs Carlton Davis to return. If he doesn’t, CB is our 2nd biggest need behind Edge.
S has zero depth. Also a major need.

My opinion would be DE, DE and DE as #1. Hutch is a stud but still leads our team in sacks after not playing 2/3 of year.

I harped on the pass rush before the season because it was still a concern. With Hutch and McNeil both playing we did good but I think we need another solid DE.

I would agree we need to continue build OL as well as we have some guys aging and we know how important it is to our run game and Goff.

I would be in favor of another WR and S/CB in mid rounds because we know we are going to have some tough decision on Jamo, Branch and Kirby and I’m not convinced we can pay everyone but we will see.

I think DT depends on what happens with Levi but we know we only signed Reader to a 2 year deal and cannot count on Bromart. paschal and z smith offer a ton of versatility but would be good to add another young prospect into that mix

I don’t agree with your ‘meh’ assessment for Iffy. Unless of course, it’s because he’s always unavailable. When he’s healthy, I think he’s a pivotal part of the back end that allows the Lions to do a lot with their scheme in moving guys around. Hopefully his injuries allow him to come back at a discount.

Oline makes a lot of sense… Knowing Holmes though, probably a surprise. Plus free agency happens before the draft so nearly impossible to predict now.

Because right now, based on SOS, we are 32. I don’t think it’s a prediction or anything. It’s the same on all the draft sims.

I think they more or less have the needs right. I think ranking them now is unproductive as it will change depending on how we proceed with our own guys needing new contracts.

If we do happen to go on and win the Super Bowl might as well add center to that list because Ragnow probably retires.

The injuries have made this seem worse than it is. A unit of Hutch, Smith, Paschal, Davenport (if we bring him back for dirt cheap) and Muhammad is fine, honestly, IF they can stay healthy. I’d like to add a young guy to that corps as well, but 3 of them? Extreme overkill.

I said this in one of the draft threads, but if we lost the equivalent of what we lost on the DL on the OL - say, Sewell, Decker, Rags and Glasgow with Zeitler still around and fighting it out in the Reader role - do you think we would have finished 15-2? I think we would have been far, far worse. The injuries are just skewing our perception.

For me OL is the top need, followed by edge. And I wouldn’t be too broken up if we went CB or WR in the 2nd and edge later on.

And Barnes to a lesser extent. I do believe the next step of his evolution was intended to be as an Elephant Man early Charles Haley type of defender on certain reps.
