NFL court question

@Nate or other moderators… The justice department is opening a NFL antitrust investigation. Are we able to discuss our beloved football league within this context?

Let’s turn the NFL into another sport where the richest teams can buy championships! Then they’ll all be the same!

Does this have anything to do with Sunday Ticket or something else?

I’m not sure. Just saw the title hit the news wire. Just thought it was an odd realm in terms of the permission structure so I thought I would check before opening the can of worms.

I think it’s based on something we all agree on. At least I’d like to hope we would. The fact that I have to subscribe to potentially 4 or 5 different services just to watch my team is complete BS. But I’m sure there are some asshats that would somehow turn that political for some odd reason.

Here’s a blurb on it……………”The DOJ has opened an investigation into the NFL’s anticompetitive tactics that may harm consumers, particularly regarding the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 and the impact of media rights contracts on consumers.”

It is about how the NFL has YT, Netflix, Peacock, and Prime for games and whether they are breaking some sort of broadcasting act rules.

Don’t worry the NFL is always going to beat the US government.

As an out of local market Lions fan please make this lead to less costly ways to watch the games at home.

I don’t see why not.

But the moment it turns into a political pissing match, we’re closing it down because it never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever ends well or yields anything remotely constructive.

Yeah, I am no expert in this area, but I had understood that the original antitrust exemption the league got also included some assurances from them about making sure fans could still watch their local team on regular (free) broadcast TV. If part of the idea behind this exemption was that there would be protections for fans, at least for being able to watch their local team, that definitely seems to have gone out the window.

What I find interesting is that the man in charge of the justice department and the government in general was a USFL owner when they lost their lawsuit that caused the USFL to have to fold. Or perhaps that is better described as it prevented the Hail Mary that would have prevented the USFL from having to fold.

They actually won the lawsuit lol
