NFL Franchise tag by year showing trends by position

So quite a few players on the Lions are getting PAID!
But I wanted to show the trends in the NFL. Using franchise tag by position VS the salary cap.

Nothing too surprising here at all really.

QBs keep pushing the market up.
WR&OL have a slight bump but mostly flat ~9%
TE&RB are making less now than 10 years ago vs the cap. ~5%
Defense is all converging around 9%

But whats wild if the cap keeps going up ~8% year over year and the trends of the positions keep going. In 10 years this what we could be looking at

NFL salary cap of ~$600m
Tags
QB ~ $110m
TE/RB ~$30m
Everyone else ~$55m

Yes there will be a $100m QB in the next 10 years if the trends continue. Wild.

@DeadStroke will there be $100m qbs soon?

Would not surprise me at all. When I see WR’s getting 30 to 35 mill a year…elite qb deserves at least double a WR…maybe more. Top WR only touches the ball 7 to 8 times a game on average.

As for the highest paid in 2026
QB ~$143 AAV

RB/TE ~$50aav

Rest ~$70aav

Based on the trends we could see a $100 contract by 2031.

$100m aav contract with the cap being ~$444m
~23%

It would be a lot higher if Mahommes pushed for a bigger contract. With him accepting less, it has caused a bottle jam at the top. With Dak as the highest, even though a dozen QB’s deserve more than him. As long as Mahommes doesn’t push his contract (or his replacement as best in NFL), it will take longer.

Not sure how you are getting these figures? 2025 QB’s are in high $40M’s - low $50M’s.

Based on cap%.

In 2015 it was about 12.9% of the cap to franchise tag your Qb ($18.54m)
Today its 15.3%! (40.24m)

Franchise tag is just a good way to see the top average.

The trend gas been pretty linear since 2011. With obviously a few bumps. But for the most part that franchise tag percentage has been increasing by about 0.24% a year.

Meaning 10 years from now, the QB TAG will be about 17.4%!

And the way the cap goes up year over year by about 8%. That means the cap will likely be close to 600m!!! Ergo about 100m franchise tag.

And the highest paid QB is typically ~20% higher than the tag.

Meaning if the tag is 100m the highest paid QB could likely be 120m AAV!

(Sorry i doubled 1 factor by mistake to get 143)

So highest paid in 2035
QB ~$120m
DBs ~$60m
Rb/te ~$50
Rest ~$75m

Ah, ok, you had listed as that was the AAV for 2026, you meant 2035 or some time in the future.

Yes my bad 2035***

But exponential growth is a mind blowing when you put it into context
