Stumbled across this and didn’t see it discussed here. Kind of lazy narrative, but Patrick Daugherty has Holmes #6. I don’t have a big problem with him there, only due to longevity. If it was just based on the last three years I would have him #1.
Astonishing draft record. 29/29 draft picks (prior to '24) still on the roster, and most of them contributing at a high level. Pro personnel has been phenomenal. The Goff deal alone would put him top ten. Add Anzalone, Buggs, Jones, Cominskey, Reynolds. The Williams v Montgomery decision. Hard to imagine any GM has been better at identifying specific players who both fit and who didn’t require long term investments. Davis and Zeitler are two more who we may be able to add to this list after this year.
It really is. Goff’s trajectory is still pointed up and he’s already around top 5ish.
The alternative is to point out that McVay is missing some clothing
Yes. Big omission. Their only real miss was the WR room to open '21, but considering their best alternative was to re-ink Golladay, and considering how they maneuvered that miss into Sun God and Reynolds it also demonstrates how well layered their strategies have been.
Rotopat’s take here is SHIT. Giving Brad crap for Goff (who the author notes “Holmes thinks surprising holdover OC Ben Johnson can continue to make a recently-extended Goff part of the solution as opposed to the problem.” as well as"unorthodox decisions like using first-round picks on an off-ball linebacker and change-of-pace running back and making a slot man one of the game’s highest-paid receivers" when these decisions brought this team along further than any of the other top 5 teams.
Holmes decisions have worked out. Period. Just give Holmes credit and move on instead of backhanded insults.
I have no issue withe the top 5 teams/executives. But placing Holmes below Snead in 2024 seems like a mistake. The Lions are a MUCH more experienced team at this point than the Rams, who Holmes beat in the playoffs in 2023. This isn’t 2021 anymore.
That was the one I questioned too, but I think I might be undervaluing Snead’s body of work. He maneuvered two very different teams to Super Bowls and was an architect of Eff Them Picks at a time when teams overvalued them. They had a brilliant draft class in '23 without a 1st.
The article links the ratings for the prior 2 years too and they’re worth reading for entertainment. In last year’s rating, they were baffled by the Lions 2023 draft–the results of which rocketed Brad to #5 this year.
I still am uncertain whether this is real life or just a computer simulation. Are good things really happening for the Lions?
Brad should be 2nd or 3rd at worst, He helped take a pitiful Lions team, the brunt of jokes and wise-cracks, the gutter cats, losing so much I wondered in the League would just scrap us, because we sucked so bad BOOM-here comes : Sheila , Brad, Dan , Chris , and all the others , and molded us into a team that CAN compete for a bowl-in three or four off-seasons…you name me a GM that did more.
Thats a good rank…the people in front of him are pillars of the NFL. Their resumes speak for themsleves and longevity.
Like it or not Goff is considered a a situational qb. His teams are top notch. That narrative will never change. Even with winning, it won’t change. He is a top qb, who cares if he isnt top 5, bc he isnt. But you can win w Goff and he is going to win in Detroit so where he ranks amongst his peers is whatever…
This guy Daugherty is just another McVay fan boy. He ranks McVay as the second best coach in the NFL. My guess is like many in the media (and especially in LA market) the decision has been made that Goff sucks because MCVAY SAID SO!!
McVay decided to make Goff the sacrificial lamb for not winning a Super Bowl and got rid of him. Stafford coming in (along with some other guys) and winning the Super Bowl just added fuel to that fire.
Holmes has let several guys walk that were smart moves. Kenny G, Jamaal Williams, and Chark have all done jack squat after leaving Detroit. Sometimes the best moves are the bad contracts you avoid giving out. Like giving Jonah 50 million… hell no. Trading Hock to avoid paying him huge money was another smart move.
