NFL/ Lions Offense and Defense Rankings since 2020

So I wanted to see the progress that the Lions have made since 2020. And wow! They have come a long way. If the defense takes another step this year this team will be deadly!

I may be wrong but I still think Defense is just harder to build than offense.

And yes once you get a defense right it seems so easy. But getting there is super hard. Knowing how to work as an 11 man unit and flow properly and fill the right lanes at all times takes the right athletes and a knowledge base and trust.

Offense can work if just 1 WR and QB are in sync. And yes I am simplifying it but you can make it work if not everyone is on the same page. Where defense really needs all 11 on the same page.

Yea offense you just need.
Above average QB, OL, and a decent WR and RB.
Thats only 8 players.

Defense you need at least 16+ decent players.
Because you need a rotation of front 4 AND if you have 1 weakness any decent team will exploit it

Great view! Thank you @DBend144 for getting us this data.

This again makes me think that Glenn is holding this team back.

Glenn inherited the 32nd ranked defense from Patricia and they finished 31st. Robert Salah inherited the 27th ranked defense for the jets and they finished 32nd in 2021.

Then in 2022, the Jets jumped to #4 overall! I consider Salah to be one of the best defensive coaches. They finished #8 in 2023. Fangio is another coach that wherever he goes, they jump up 10-15 spots quickly with him. Check out Denver with him and through last year and last year without him they were 31st.

The Lions on the other hand finished even worse in 2022! Then made a decent jump to 21 last season.

The lions continue to add talent. Still, this is year 4 now. What do we expect? If the Defense doesn’t finish top 15, doesn’t that mean that Glenn will never be a top 15 coach? He will have had 4 years to put his mark on the team and if he can never achieve top half of the league, doesn’t that mean he is not a top half of the league coach?

I’d think playing indoors on turf would mean more points scored both ways but the Saints are indoors and are top 7 the last 4 years.

Great coaches can squeeze greatness out of their players and cover the weaknesses. Glenn seems to be beholding to his talent, which means it will always be a middle of the road defense at best. Hoping he proves me wrong this season. I just don’t see it…

Lions fans know better than most that the head coach is SO important to the success of a team. DC has proven what a good head coach can do winning 2 playoff games for the first time in forever for the Lions.

Shouldn’t a great DC be able to have a great defense as well? I know it takes time and talent, but the Lions have had plenty of both and are still in the lower half of the league.

Goff tends to help defenses too because he is good at longer, ball control drives. It’s not like the lions were scoring so fast that the defense wasn’t getting rests.
