NFL to add Hawk-Eye virtual line-measuring system for 2025 season

The NFL and Sony’s Hawk-Eye announced a partnership Tuesday to bring a virtual measuring system to NFL games beginning in the 2025 season. The system will replace the chain gang as the league’s primary line-to-gain measuring system, though NFL games will still feature a chain gang on the sidelines as a backup.

The system will virtually determine the line of scrimmage for all plays and can be used to overturn a referee’s spot. According to Hawk-Eye, the virtual system will save up to 40 seconds compared to measuring ball placement via a chain gang.

===============================

The NFL used the virtual system during the 2024 preseason and said it will be installed in all 30 NFL stadiums, as well as the league’s international venues.

Hawk-Eye first gained recognition for its virtual line-calling system installed for pro tennis matches in 2005, and has now become a go-to tech partner across many major professional sports leagues. MLB, for example, uses the company’s tech for its Statcast and automatic ball-strike challenge system, while the NBA uses Hawk-Eye to run the league’s primary tracking system.

I’m surprised it took this long.

Didn’t they try this in the preseason last year? And didn’t it take them like three minutes of real time to confirm a first down?

Hopefully that gets fixed, because if it does, this is an absolute plus for the game.

Finally!
Use the technology you have to make the game cleaner (and hopefully faster).

Me to. It’s been a pet peeve of mine.

Is this the system that puts a chip in the ball to know where the ball is at?

If so it can do a lot more than just measuring the spot.

Why the NFL took so long is a mystery.

Anything that can take referee errors out of the game should be embraced.

Hawk Eye any relation to Hawk Tuah?

Agree…chip the ends and put up a virtual barrier (like an electric fence dog collar) in the endzones so they know exactly when a TD is scored.

I’m all for less technology in the world.

BUT

Can we get robots to replace umpires

And

AI babes to replace the influencers/only fans models

I really am rooting for the latter

Oh that is already happening for sure. Dudes spending tons of money spanking it to AI deepfake vids.

Honestly, I’m not a big fan of tech

It dehumanizes the game, and people still find ways of bellyaching and claiming they were robbed

We should just publish the license plate numbers of the refs, and expect them to remain attentive

It’s more complicated in football.
In other sports it’s just tracking the ball.
In football it’s not only tracking the location of the ball but you also have to determine where the ball is when the carrier is downed by contact.
So there may still be a lot of judgement involved in the spot.
But it is better than some of the arbitrary calls of officials.

I could just see some joker making it read out in millimeters. Looks like Campbell is going for it on 4th and 4572.

Agreed. Chips and Ai aside, you’ll still have the Brad Allen’s of the world completely bollocks what are otherwise storybook finishes.

Can it fix the missed delay of game penalties too? Seems like they sgould be able to sync that somehow.

That would be such an easy fix. All they have to do is put some type of buzzer on the line judge. When the clock hits zero the buzzer goes off. If the ball isn’t snapped by then it’s a delay of game.

The way they do it now is stupid. It drives me crazy.

Good God, yes. I doubt it though. They could have done it in the 1950’s.

I know the G-men and Jets share a stadium but who else? Rams Chargers?

I’d like to see a shock collar attached to Brad Allen’s testicles.
