Okudah progressing

Yup - this most closely resembles my opinion too.

Sorry, I can’t agree with this lazy take that “you don’t take a CB at #3!!!”

That’s silly. First of all, every draft class is different as to what’s at the top. Corner is probably the most important position besides QB, LT, Rush End and outside of Burrow and Chase Young, no one was thought of as a better prospect than Okudah. Secondly, if someone came to you tomorrow and says, “if you draft Okudah you’re getting Gilmore, Tre White, or Jalen Ramsey” you absolutely take him at 3 and by all projections going into the draft - that’s what you’re getting.

I have absolutely 0 issue with them drafting him there.

Why is it a “lazy” take when history has shown that teams don’t take CB’s in the top 3 of the draft?
Why does it make no sense for any other teams but somehow it makes sense for the Lions to do what nobody else does?..like draft Tight Ends in the top 10 or CB’s in the top 3?..yet we continue to suck.

For me personally I’m not one to follow such theory because any position can bust and every position has done so. That said you and your staff have to do your homework and make sure you don’t make a bad investment in a pick/position just cause “well this is what is done through history.” I hear this all the time “you don’t take a RB high in the draft.” In 2003 they said “you don’t take a WR that high”…meaning Charles Rogers. I just think that is such faulty logic.

You are right…sincerely Tony Mandarich, Ryan Leaf, Andre Wadsworth and Jamarcus Russell by the way of Deion Sanders, Charles Woodson, Champ Bailey & Jalen Ramsey

He was the #3 pick overall. Not only do we need him to step up but we need to play at a PB level.

That’s who I wanted. The DL was awful and has been for years and I thought Brown could help.

Huh? This makes zero sense. The only similarity Okudah has with those three, is they all play CB.

With your logic, we should have taken Brown, because we were really getting Reggie White.

Wait, what?

What would people deem as an acceptable second year from Okudah this year?

I think the defense will be much improved on last year. It will still be at best league average but I think they will make a lot more plays and look a lot more fluid.

Notice he said “if”…so he’s not saying necessarily that Okudah is any of those three. What he is saying is that he doesn’t like the “You don’t take a CB at #3 overall” logic because when fans say that they mean any and every CB regardless of how great a player he may turn out to be.

My guess is the person who said don’t take a CB at #3 overall, was taking into full consideration the limited athlete Okudah has shown to be. So yes, they should have taken the time to type it out, rather than assume you knew they meant a CB that isn’t even the best athlete in their draft class. Watch his tape … he can’t run with fast receivers. He just can’t. Top CB’s like Deion, Ramsey, etc, all can.

That’s the real issue with him at #3.

I never chimed in on the Okudah debate when it was going on. I understand what you are saying about his abilities or what not, and if I were making that pick I probably would have taken the kid from Clemson myself or one of the QBs. But with Quinn and Patricia you knew they wouldn’t take a QB so the Lions were caught between a rock & a hard place.

I don’t disagree with that at all. They put themselves in a bad position … and I’m sure they were concerned how it would have looked if they passed on Okudah, and he turned out to be a really good CB.

Glad our current front office is 1000x more competent then the clowns that were escorted out of the building.

This is a complete and utter crock of BS. I watched the Buckeyes a ton in 2019 and Okudah was an absolute stud. Don’t impugn other’s football knowledge bc you have a different opinion on what is in large part subjective. He had a dominant Junior year, is a high level athlete, is an A+ individual, is a factor in both the run and pass game as so on. You might like more productivity playing the ball and maybe a shade more speed, but short of that he was a damn near perfect CB prospect coming out.

Why do you think you know more about football than say Daniel Jeremiah? Let’s stick to the football part of it rather than impugn other board members for what are opinions. People should be allowed to disagree without being portrayed as ignorant on the topic matter by other posters.

I wanted Okudah, but my No. 1 draft choice was trading down.

He’s not a limited athlete. His RA score is below. His head was swimming as a rookie. That didn’t allow him to play up to his ability. You will like what you see in the coming years.

I wanted Tua and was concerned about Herbert’s accuracy so I’m not trying to pretend like I have the answers. I most certainly do not. But neither Derrick Brown nor Simmons really excited me a ton. I would’ve preferred to move down and still grab Okudah but I still did think at the time that he was the best player at #3OA and I don’t think that was a wild opinion to have.
