One Aspect I Love About the Trade for Gibbs

Is the swap of pick 81 for 34.

It doesn’t seem like much to move down, but that move up from 81 probably, if picked well obviously, gets us a high level starter.

I can’t tell you how many mocks I did where I wanted a CB, RB, OG, DT, and LB or EDGE and there just wasn’t enough picks.

That is no longer a problem. I could be wrong on what positions they are after. But regardless, this really means 5 players in the top 55 with a very high likelihood to start.

When I saw the draft room, I’ll admit it looked a little forced. The reaction, that is. But perhaps some of the excitement was adding a great player plus getting that high second rounder in the process. Just think about what a difference Jameson Williams, Josh Paschal, Kirby Joseph, James Houston, and Malcolm Rodriquez made last year. It was transformative. Now we put ourselves in a position to do it one more time.

They also retain a lot of flexibility with their 5 later round picks

They can still move up/around/out to get more of their guys

I think today is a very important day for our future. Crush these picks and we could really be set up for the long haul.

3 2nd rounders!

I remember when Millen had that.

I doubt we see any Alama-Francis’s drafted by Holmes.

Haha, that is the big concern right? I’m kind of hoping Josh Paschal broke the 2nd round curse for us. Otherwise what am I talking about - this is a nightmare scenario!

So big. In fact, I think Brad Holmes knows this and that is why he is making sure these guys he is drafting have high floors. He needs these picks to hit. And he knows if they do we’re setting ourselves up for a run to Vegas.

The Super Bowl’s in Vegas?

We already got that pick out of the way with the 18th selection of the first round. I look forward to a better draft in the 2nd round.

Drew Stanton over the obvious need at LB David Harris.

And then Gerald Alexander because Millen heard a rumor some other team wanted him.

How can an NFL GM not even hit one ONE 2nd rounder when you have three?

I would also add that I can’t really stomach paying another RB 30M on his rookie deal vs Gibbs 19M.

Same way he couldn’t hit on a top 10 pick even though he had one every year. lol

Wow. That hadn’t clicked until you mentioned it. I knew one of Alexander or Bullocks was involved, then I looked it up and it all came back to me.

I believe that was the draft that no TV network had any film footage of one of the players ready because there was no way they were getting picked until the late rounds.

They traded down with Buffalo, who wanted LB Paul Posluszny, at No. 34.

Harris was sitting right there at No. 43 and they took Stanton instead even though Martz reportedly preferred JT O’Sullivan.

Funny how ancient history starts coming back to you as though it was just a couple years ago. Haunting, really, especially with the Lions.

Its kind of ironic that the last time we had (3) 2nd round picks we all wanted an off the ball linebacker instead of who we picked. I remember some fans even wanted to trade down to collect picks and take Harris in the late 1st round. There were others that wanted Patrick Willis after a trade down.

As far as I can tell, Holmes strongly prefers Power 5 Conference players in the first couple of rounds. In fact, I think James Houston is the only player he drafted that isn’t from a Power 5 Conference team so far, right? And he played at FSU before transferring. He’s not the guy that was going to draft Josh Allen.

Everyone seems to think he’s being traded but Swift at least has been a productive 2nd rounder. Just under 3000 yards and 25 TD’s in 3 seasons. So maybe we aren’t completely cursed in the 2nd round. Delmas was pretty good too.

But shit yea 90% have been brutal. smh
