Patriots targeting Fields?

According to the NFL Network, the Patriots have had exploratory trade talks with teams in the top 10 of the draft.

According to those teams, the Pats are hoping to move up to draft Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields.

“The Patriots have been calling around in the top 10,” NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Monday, “and teams that have gotten those calls believe that their target would be Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields.”

The rumor that would have Patriots fans the most excited is about Thursday’s first round. According to the NFL Network, the Pats have been calling teams about trading into the top 10 in the first round. The report states that teams are getting the feeling that the Patriots are targeting Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields.

NFL reporter Tom Pelissero, speaking for a recent segment on NFL Network, offered an intriguing scenario.

“This is an interesting one,” Pelissero began. “The Patriots have been calling around in the top-10. And teams that have gotten those calls believe that [New England’s] target would be Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields. Now it would cost the Patriots a lot to move from 15 up to seven or eight, probably the in the region of a second-round draft pick. But that is a small price to pay if New England sees an opportunity to land a potential franchise quarterback.”

That probably means it doesn’t happen–at least not with the Lions.

It didn’t get that sense from the rumors, unless you’re using reverse psychology.

I also laughed at the quote “Now it would cost the Patriots a lot to move up to 7 or 8, probably in the region of a 2nd round pick” ■■■■ off with that, Bill ain’t getting off that easy. Carolina can take that shitty package if they want.

In any event, I think all these trade down rumors are going to lead to a letdown. The chances of a trade like this being executed, and it being the Lions to execute it, are miniscule and if two QBs are sitting there at 7 and one is Jones, chances are that no trade down happens as the Patriots could easily let Jones slide to 15 or do a more minor trade down to the low teens.

If Fields makes it past San Fran, I find it highly unlikely that he’ll make it past 4. If a team is going to offer a package to trade up, I just can’t see ATL passing.

If 5 QBs go in the top 14 then NE is probably a fairly safe trade spot. Especially if Jones goes #3OA.

5 QBs + Pitts + 3 WRs + the top 2 OTs + 2 CBs + Parsons = 14 players

I’d prefer not to CB (and I feel confident both will be gone by 15) but after the trade down I’m okay with it.

Point being that NE’s makes it very likely one of the elite guys. We just need one pass rusher or a third OL to go in the top 14.

If we get their ‘22 first and even as little as a 4th and a 5th I’d do the deal.

I’d be highly disappointed if we move back to 15 for just a 2nd round pick.

that’s what I meant by that comment

Agree, year after year we keep hoping for a trade down, the big splash of a trade, and it never happens for many reasons.

If Fields is their target, I’d think the Lions would be the most likely trading partner for NE. Carolina is a legimate factor in the QB equation, IMO. Darnold may end up being the Panthers long term solution, but he would be a much better transition QB than Bridgewater–who can be unloaded at a discount–and he would still retain some trade value once Fields is ready.

The fickle football gods are strewing the Lions draft path with rose petals this year instead of thorns. The dream continues…

Rapaport was speculating, in a segment with Rich Eisen, that the Panthers could truly be interested in a QB (given billionaire owner Tepper’s desire for one [Sam Darnold ain’t it] (https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2021/02/20/whether-its-deshaun-watson-or-someone-else-david-tepper-is-determined-to-get-a-great-quarterback/), which might cause Denver to leapfrog Carolina and trade up. The thought is that it would be for Justin Fields, not Trey Lance.

Exactly. There is absolutely no way in hell they get into the top 10 from 15 without a future #1 in the deal. Pure idiocy to think otherwise on Tom Pelissero’s part.

It’s Coach Dan and Holmes - the football gods love 'em. Some authentic love for the game, the process, the men…not just a bunch of self-serving gigantic egos.

The front offices are more aligned with truly loving football.
The football gods are being honored, and they always know.

The year of the Lion is near. For the NFC north…winter is coming…The age of Campbell is coming into fruition. Packers, Bears, Vikings…Hide the women and children. We are coming to pillage and raid your stadiums!

Hey, that must mean he’s good. We should take him.

Now, I think that’s what’s going to actually happen too.

If a QB is there at 7 and the Pat’s want to trade up then there is a premium they simply have to pay. I would think their 2nd round pick plus a 5th rounder and day 2 pick next year would be a minimum going in position for the Lions.

Would be disappointed if they dropped for anything less under all 5 QBs are already off the board

I don’t disagree… If we are talking about a potential R Wilson, or hell even a young Matt Stafford without spending 12 year trying to ruin him lol…

Hollywood Brown and Desean Jackson are BOTH THICKER than D Smith- I don’t care what he did in college… He will be a 900-1000 yard pro high side imo…

J Waddle can’t be ignored as an injury risk as a 180 “speed freak” given he’s the guy coming off a broken ankle.

Parsons is an off the ball LBer which is typically not a top 10 pick, and then compound it by a year off (M Clarett and Big Mike Williams are kind of the only precedents) and I’m quite nervous at #7 at least. At #9 with an extra pick to draft a 6’ 190 pound WR 40 picks later like Toney or T Wallace and I can get behind it as a twofer- I guess

Would I take Slater over Fields? No

Unless we get a HAUL I woudn’t pass on Fields, Chase or Sewell…

Does this seem low to anybody else? A second? If they are trading up for a QB you make them bleed. But if the Lions don’t want a QB, then I’m cool with them taking what they can get. They need to build a team.

I have been making the same suggestion in some other threads… and I think the Vikings REALLY need OT and DE more than anything other positions. Since Zim and Spielman might feel the seat getting a little warm (maybe even hot at this point)… I can’t see them drafting any other position.

I think they might be choosing between Darrisaw and Jaelon Phillips/Kwitty Paye.

That pick plus their 6th is equal on the JJ trade value chart.

I’d do it if they flipped next years first for #45. I think next year’s first are overly discounted.

If I’m the Lions the Patriots get a surcharge because F them lol.

How about #15 overall, plus the Pats 2rd rounder this year and the Pats 2022 2nd rounder for #7.

That’s getting closer imo. We would then have added another 2rd this year, plus a 2nd next year, and could still get a stud at 15.

The Quinntiricia mark up? That sounds fair.
