Penei Sewell ranked 6th best OT for 2025 by PFF

I couldn’t believe he wasn’t at least top 3.

6. Penei Sewell, Detroit Lions

Arguably the best run-blocking offensive tackle in the league, Sewell would have ranked higher on this list had he performed better as a pass blocker in 2024.

He has earned a 95.7 PFF run-blocking grade over the past two seasons, which leads all offensive tackles. However, he placed only 29th at the position with a 75.4 PFF pass-blocking grade in 2024 after allowing pressure on 4.7% of pass plays (23rd).

Other random bulletin board material:

Jamo ranked 32nd WR.
We have no IOL ranked in top 32.
KerJo only ranked 6th safety (with BB 5th).

Do we overrate Penei, or is PFF out to lunch?

A lot of experts - including former NFL OL, not to mention Brandon Thorn, who I greatly respect as an OL mind - have taken to pointing out WHY Sewell isn’t as good as some of the other elite tackles out there like Lane Johnson, Wirfs and Trent Williams, and it’s almost completely down to his pass-blocking technique.

And honestly, they’re not wrong. Penei can be a bit all over the place. Certainly when you capture his reps in a vid they don’t look nearly as clean as those other guys. Part of that is due to less than ideal length - he’s often fighting an uphill battle right off the snap - which often puts him in catch-up mode for the bulk of a rep.

But what they fail to mention, imo, is that he DOES catch up, almost always. Yes, he gets beat at the beginning of a rep more often than you’d like… but he’s usually recovered by the time the rep ends. In fact I can really only remember 2 or 3 times he didn’t (one in the Houston game).

That said, the main reason I think they’re missing the boat on him is that unlike those other guys, we actually design plays around the things Sewell CAN do. There’s not another OL like him in that respect. We ask him to do some batshit crazy things like take on two guys, or reach a deep safety, or pull much further than any other OL has to pul, or go in motion. He’s such a force multiplier for us and isn’t getting enough credit for it.

I’m going to reevaluate how I feel about Penei based on PFF scores? That will be the day you should take me out behind the barn and put me out of my misery.

Sewell is an animal. I do agree he’s a better run blocker than pass blocker. I wouldn’t trade him for any other offensive tackle in football. Keep in mind he hasn’t even entered his prime yet. He’s barely older than @HSVLion Could easily play another 10 years.

If Sewell is 6th, those others must be pretty d@mn good

I for one don’t watch other team’s OT’s, I only care about the Lions

PFF ratings have to be taken with a grain of salt. While useful, there a lot of issues with it.

Thank you, PFF.
That’s going to piss off the #1 OT in the NFL.
You will learn respect.

There’s not 32 better than Jamo

Who’s the 4 better than Kerby and Branch?

This is one of those things where they need to question their ratings, not us ours.

I just think of Coach Fipp talking about PFF when these things are brought up.

Fipp had two stories about PFF.

“So, the next one is PFF…and it’s the PFF grades. And this came up this week again because somebody in the building came to me and said, ‘Hey, there is this player, he’s playing really well for you guys.’ And I’m like, ‘Who said that?’ They said, ‘Well, PFF.’ And I was like, ‘OK.’ Well, here’s two stories for you on PFF. Number one is, I get on a plane, I think I was going to the Combine, this is years ago, and when I sit down, this guy sitting next to me says, ‘Hey, are you a coach for – ‘ I think I was with Philly at the time. I’m like, ‘Yeah,’ And he’s like, ‘Ah, I’m a grader of PFF…He was a young guy, I’m like, ‘Tell me about yourself.’ The guy had never coached football, never played football and he’s grading our players on who played good and who played bad.”

“The next thing on that is, we play a game at the Giants and the special teams coach at the time or assistant there at the time was a good friend of mine, and he came up to me before the game and he said, ‘Hey man, just so you know, this player –‘ I can’t say his name, he’s actually in the media nowadays, but he said, ‘This player, he’s the best rated front-line blocker on kickoff return in the National Football League.’ And I was like, ‘Who said that?’ And he was like, ‘PFF.’ And then I was like, ‘PFF?’”

“I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ I’m like, ‘Number one, this guy’s like the worst blocker on our team. But number two, we put him on these matchups on the backside of the return every week where he’s blocking basically a guy that doesn’t need to be blocked, but we kind of have to block him just in case. So, he wins the matchup, so he got a good PFF grade, and he’s really the worst player on our team at this job description, but he’s really the best with PFF.”

Totally disagree. This is the sort of close-mindedness that is so dangerous in the social-media world. Its best NOT to only have your view and get it supported exclusively by other like-minded sites, people, chat-bots etc. etc. And not even consider other opinions.

Every morning, I open four sites for new news. Two which I respect as being in the center, one very right-leaning, and one very left-leaning. Its a good way to learn.

I’m not saying you should ditch what you think and go by PFF. PFF (like any rating system or model) certainly has flaws that are well-known by those of us who pay attention. Yet their flawed system can also produce insights, and you should be able to take or leave those insights. It IS good to consider what they are saying and incorporate it (or not) into what you think you know.

This is an informed person taking it into account: Penei Sewell ranked 6th best OT for 2025 by PFF - #2 by Thats2

Hamilton (ok, maybe so).
But not:
McKinney, nah
Bates (no way)
Winfield, hmm.
KerJo could be first, second, or third at worse. Not sixth. I think he’s being downgraded b/c he hits too hard, lol.
