With all due respect I gotta disagree with you here on principle. I love going for it on 4th down in the scenario where you could kick a FG or extend the drive and take more time off the clock and score a TD. In my opinion there are few things scarier or more disheartening than a team that can consistently convert 4th downs. It keep their defense on the field, it sucks out the energy, and if you convert and get the points, or even if you still settle for the field goal a little later, You still put the doubt in the opposing team’s head.
Instead of taking the points my argument would be to become a better team at converting 4th down. Nobody wants to rely on a kicker and they have been all but eliminated from the game anyway, so get better at keeping the opposing defense in doubt and on their heels!
Just my $.02 about why teams should strive for converting vs taking a FG
