I trust these guys. They have been right more than wrong, and REALLY correct on some guys.
There are always going to be misses. Brad KILLS round 2!
This draft is weak on QBs, so there won’t be a run of those, but many of the “top” guys aren’t “premium” positions. A very unpredictable draft. The Lions had a worse season than the team actually is, so picking 17 is interesting. Free agency addressed their most pressing needs.
This is where the better GMs stand out, and we have one! Someone great is gonna fall to 17 if we stay there. At any rate, I trust Brad, this is the kind of draft he can kill. I have a hunch we’ll stay.
My biggest thing is I would like to see how we’re going to improve upon giving opposing QBs the most time to throw on average of any team in the league.
Other than that, this has been an “A” offseason for me. I really liked our free agency. They just have this one very major issue to fix, and they can compete for a Super Bowl next season again.
That stat is not accurate, there was a article on it and that time to throw stat includes QB scrambles witch we were bad at witch made our time to throw not very accurate and look worse then it was, just like sacks were we were 4th.
I dont know that I would call this a perfect draft for Brad but he will need to earn his stripes in this one.
This draft lacks top end talent so teams should be able to move around to get their guy. Brad loves to trade and move around the board.
He’s had 5 NFL drafts and has made 27 total trades. Thats 5+ per draft.
In those 5 drafts he had 36 selections so only 9 stayed where they were expected to. Thats less than 2 per draft and most of those did happen in round one.
I think the Lions will look to move up in round one. Brad doesn’t have a ton of ammo so I doubt he moves far but he could leap up to 12 probably. I think 5 spots are the realistic limit.
I highly expect him to try to get another pick in the top 95. The meat of this draft is from 15-95. With that in mind if the two guys they covet are gone they could trade down to stock pile ammo to move back up.
Also …… if the guys they covet are gone don’t be shocked if they pass on OT early all together.
I have been extremely vocal in my desire to get a DE in the first round. However, if the OT we take is Mauigoa, and our doctors think the back issue is actually not that big of a deal, then I’d be happy with the OT in the first round.
Trading Aidan Hutchinson would just be flat out stupid, so it’s not him.
Trading Jack Campbell likely wouldn’t happen, but I guess it could be him. I do think I remember you specifically talking about how valuable he was though and how we won’t not pay him or something. I also don’t think we need to be paying a mike linebacker a bunch of money when we can’t consistently rush the passer, but I’d prefer to keep Jack long term.
Kerby can get traded if the knee issue is chronic, but I can’t see an NFL team trading for a safety with a big contract and a possibly chronic knee issue.
Tyleik isn’t a “top defensive player.”
Anyone else can go. That’s how I feel at this moment.
I also wouldn’t be a big fan of trading away a “top defensive player” AND our pick at 17 to get just any offensive tackle, especially if the offensive tackle has a potentially career ruining back problem already.
The Lions are trying hard to trade up because the players they covet are not expected to make it to them. Teams are trying to leap the Lions so the Lions will have to outbid those teams if they want to get the guys they want.
At this point I’m highly expecting us to trade up and if that fails we will try to trade down.
The only top defensive players that are due a new contract (if that is the tactic you are talking about) is Campbell and Branch. I doubt anyone would trade for a guy who blew his Achilles so it seems like we are talking about Campbell.
The only people I think (and have thought) you could possibly be talking about are McNeill, Branch, and DJ Reed. McNeill was not good last year after an ACL tear and who knows if he’ll be good again…and is on a big contract. Branch just tore his achillies. DJ Reed looked good for four games until he messed up his hamstring and he was just ok at best after he came back, and he’s also older and getting paid decently.
I wouldn’t lose sleep trading one of those guys.
I would however question how our defense, which has been a liability for like 85% of the time that Brad and Dan have been here, gets any better by trading guys away without replacing them, but I digress.
If we do take a tackle, I hope it’s one of the top 5. Or well, one of MY top 5, cause I’m not impressed with the rest. (Mauigoa, Freeling, Miller, Fano, Iheanachor)
