Pistons Draft & beyond

Growth isnt linear its exponential

Going from a BAD NBA team to above average is reality easy. Thats normal growth.

Going from above average to championship? Thats a WHOLE new ball game.

A player going from ok to above average. Thats real expected growth.

Going from above average to All Star? Yea thats hard to do and rare.

Marginal improvement means. 40 wins to 45 wins.
From making the playoffs to winning the first series.

Im sorry but i want CHAMPIONSHIPS!

If yall are ok with the team getting better through development. And winning 45 games and winning the first series. And getting bounced in the 2nd round. Cool. Have fun.

With a move, they could make the ECF!

Pistons core.

Cade, Ivy, Holland.

Everyone else is a bench player on a championship team.

Sorry pistons dont need 6 bench players. Or a useless draft pick the next 3 years.

Keep 2 of the bench players
(duren, Thompson, Stewart, Harris, Fontecchio, Sasser)

Pick 2 to keep. Trade the rest and ANY draft pick from 2025-2030.

My draft hot take:

Egor Demin will figure out his jump shot over time and become the second best pro out of this draft class.

And Duren will be able to make a shot out if the paint and thompason will make over 60% of shots and 30% from 3.

These are the leaps people WANT the players to make. Yet show NO signs of happening

I would swap duren with holland, as far as ā€œCoreā€ players. Duren I expect to improve even more from this year, which he played well. So keep cade, ivey, duren. While I like holland and ausur, and too early to give up on them, they would be first out. The rest expendable.

Ok but I don’t know what that has to do with Egor. I watched a ton of BigXII basketball since Arizona moved to that conference. My take on Demin:

-Everything else offensively is there IMO
-I’m not shot Dr. but the form isn’t fugly like Lonzo Ball
-he’s made some tweaks during the draft process and apparently results are encouraging
-some of his percentage was impacted by a really horrible mid season slump
-his shot selection from deep was fairly miserable at time
-he gets to the mid 30s from 3 and he’s going to be a mid level star

In the early teens (though it sounds like he’s climbing again) he’s a pretty exciting gamble IMO.

We don’t need him as long as we have Duren, but I would really want Khaman Maluach if we were picking high again.

Holland ceiling is much higher.

Duren hasnt really improved at all.

Yes hes made more shots within 10ft but thats it.

68% in the paint. 20% out. With 0 3pnt attempts. 2022-2024
Last year
68% in the paint. 50% from ~15’ 0 20’ beyond.

So that means if hes on the court. And NOT in the paint. You dont need to guard him.

He hasn’t improved all that much. AND hes gonna be due a 20+m contract any day. Ivy is gonna get 30+

Hes a GREAT 6th man.

Not a core 5.

Pistons need a true modern center.

So

1- Cunningham
2 - Ivy
3 - Holland
4 - Harris
5 - ???

Bench
6 - Duren
7 - Thompson

Thats it.

They are 1 good center/ Stretch4 from being a legit team. And NO. Beef Stew aint it.
Aka big that can make a 3pnt shot.

Pistons only made 12.8 3s per gam.

In the playoffs? Only 10!

Indy and Minnesota are defense slow the game down team right? They still made 13+ 3s in the playoffs.

Agreed. Duren has 1 elite trait (rebounding), high energy/athleticism and 1 above average skill (big man passing).

Holland? Elite athleticism? Maybe? Also, we already have that with Ausar. Now do we hope Holland develops a shot and can be Ausar with offense? Possible.

To me it’s sign Beasley, sign another shooter, get Ivey healthy, run it back, extend Duren and Ivey, sign JJJ. Most realistic path IMO.

The Pistons WITHOUT Ivey and Beef Stew should have taken out the Knicks period.

With Ivey we have:
Cade
Ivey
Aussar
Tobias Harris
Duren

IF the Pistons re-sign Beasley and Dennis (we have cap room) our bench looks like:
Dennis S.
Beasley
Holland
Beef Stew

To me the answer is clear: go after Bobby Portis.

The Pistons are a D and run squad now. Cade hasn’t hit his ceiling yet. Ivey can also handle the ball. Aussar isn’t close to his ceiling and he has a GREAT defensive player for us. Harris is a steady #3 option with an expiring contract.

That looks like an incredible bench to me with Portis.

Cade is the #1 option, Ivery #3, Harris #3, Jalen pick and roll and Aussar is there for energy, defense, driving and open jumpers (which he will hit over time).

I feel like trading away young pieces at this point is a LARGER gamble than gambling on these young guys growing together.

I agree with that stand point 1000%

Im just VERY worried about the CBA moving forward.
25-26 is fine.

26-27 however.

If they extend Ivy and Duren

Cade 30%
Ivy 16%
Duren 12%
Stew 9%
Everyone else 16%

So roughly 82% of the cap is taken already. Only ~$30m left before hitting the Tax cap.

Then 27-28

If you want to keep Thompson AND Sasser

Cade 30%
Ivy 15%
Duren 11%
Stew 8%
Thompson 15%
Sasser 10%
Other 8%

97% of the tax cap spoken for. Roughly $6m left,

So MY point is.

You have a 2-3 year window PERIOD.

If you want to play it with the young guys. You have 2-3 years.

If you want to make a trade and give up a couple young guys? You have 2-3 years.

So if the window is exactly the same either way. Why NOT trade a younger player for a know asset?

Yes there are ways around the cap. And maybe they dont extend everyone for as much as experts think. However under the new CBA its VERY bad to go over.

Year 1 is fine.
Repeat offenders? Lakers only 3m over. $12m tax bill.

Pheonix? 30m over! With a MASSIVE $162m tax bill.

The first American born Caucasian number 1OA pick in 48 years.

They arent keeping Sasser and fo sho not for 10%.

They will go over the tax and 1st apron because thats what contenders do.

So many pearls being clutched on here…
