They have been ok, which is better than the rest of D, but that’s not saying much. Board played 0 snaps last week by the way. I have no idea why, he only played on specials.
We’re Lions fans we have to reach to compliment anyone. I heard the team water boy has been doing a great job so far this year. Very little cramping. He might just be able to help on Defense.
Not really. He’s made a critical mistake on the second long Penny run but for the most part he’s played well as a sub package guy. Personally I’d like to see him play more when he’s healthy.
Didn’t realize he had a knee issue, but he played 17 snaps on special teams that require sprinting 40-50+ yards down field, knee can’t be too bad. I swear 50% of our roster is hurt.
McVay is in his 6th season…. and the Rams defense has been 12th to 20th in scoring defense 5 out of 6 years…. with the exception being 2020 when they were the #1 defense.
They have actually been a consistent defense… even with personnel turnover and 3 different DCs.
Here are the top 5 tacklers in 2020 from that team.
Look at them low-priced LBs leading the way….
along with DBs.
I can post all of the McVay years if needed….
but the results are the same.
The Rams have DBs that tackle…
along with their cheap LBs that also tackle.
The Lions edge players have been terrible setting the edge…
and the DBs haven’t been good in run support.
Somebody thought AO deserved an apology for being benched last week… even though he not only drew about 37 flags in 1 game… but also has been terrible in run support.
and…
for those that think a guy like Roquan Smith will solve the problem… I present Roquan… getting smashed by a QB block….
Bill Belichick and Nick Saban… plus Anyone who ever knew Monte Kiffin and…. which includes all Tampa 2 defenses plus Pete Carroll and the Legion of Boom… would disagree with this statement.
Personally I’d like to see him play well outside of a hand-full of downs each week, if you wanna say he’s done well cause the balls not around him, sure.
Standards are different on what a good player means, I guess.
I am hoping he see’s the field more and is a big contributor. But for now, man, haven’t seen it. Just my thoughts. Doesn’t mean it’s right.
Well he can only play well on downs he actually plays. Do you recall other plays that he blew besides contain on the Penny run? I feel like he’s been pretty sound for the most part. PFF liked his play in the first three weeks for whatever that’s worth.
The difference being that their CB’s are actually looking at the QB and see him hand the ball off so they are attacking the RB near the LOS.
Our CB’s have their back to the play or at best are moving sideways when the ball is handed off. They don’t know it’s run until the RB has already crossed the LOS with a full head of steam. Plus, because of the way we are currently trying to run a 4-2-5, it seems our DB’s are very easily blocked. The opposing WR is running his route to set the DB up for a block. Since the DB isn’t aware it’s a run until it’s already too late, the result is a LOT of big plays.
Our CBs are not always playing press man coverage.
They mix up coverages and play zone at times… and AO has been terrible in run support.
Here is one play I posted about from Vikings game… AO is well off the ball, has a chance to see the run blocking, and still didn’t come to fill. It has happened quite a bit.
