Watching DET D struggle vs NE run game made me go back and watch all runs of 10+ yds DET has surrendered this year.
The front 7 isn’t great - but this might be one of the worst tackling secondary’s I’ve ever seen. Medium-turned-big gains everywhere, due to missed tackles.
Yep, and this is a huge reason why playing with 2 linebackers and 5 DB’s is a problem. Your DB’s better be able to tackle well when you play a 4-2-5 defense, hence why we are on pace to give up 2800 rushing yards this year.
It’s a scheme problem. The personnel is 4-2-5, but the one safety is in the box often, essentially he’s playing linebacker. The D-line and linebacker play hasn’t been good either of course.
This is what I was thinking. Its kind of like saying “we went back and looked at every pass where the QB had 4 or more seconds and determined the secondary can’t cover for shit.”
This is when I get REALLY upset about Holmes not thinking LB is an important position. Those guys should be making the tackles. The secondary should be the absolute emergency situation.
Been saying this for awhile. Holmes brought that with him from the Rams, and I think it’s flawed and one reason the Rams defense isn’t more consistent and has kept it from being even better.
It is a problem if we’re in that personal grouping vs 12 personal. Majority of teams usually in 11 & it would be bad football to not match that with 5 DB’s on the field. Someone would have to go back & actually look at the tape. If we’re playing 5 DB’s vs 12 AG is even dumber than I thought he possibly could be. I mean I think he’s about as clueless as it gets at the coordinator level but I have a hard time believing he’s that ignorant
Maybe; Idk if the DB’s are to blame really. Lions do just have a bunch of average guys at DT. There isn’t anyone who can’t be moved or continuously disturbs plays.
RB’s with a full steam ahead against DB’s isn’t a good recipe for tackling success. Good linebackers have trouble bringing down physical/fast RB’s let alone DB’s who are slimer/smaller almost always.
Run game would look different if Lions had invested in a major interior lineman and more NFL credible LB’s.
I’m not gonna say they’re(the DB’s) are a run game asset either though. I’m just saying I don’t look to them to be major stoppers in the run defense, if they are it means RB’s are getting down field often.
Great point by Freebird, as far as I am concerned.
Great tackling DB’s are the most underrated thing in the NFL.
Yes of course you need the front seven to do their thing … but is there anything worse than watching a DB like AO halfheartedly whiff on a tackle and allow a 35 yard jog into the end zone on an otherwise well defensed play?
Some of the better teams in recent memory seem to all have a few aggressive DB’s and Safeties. We aren’t getting that at all … and that was with T Walk healthy.
Tons of room for improvement in that area AG and AP.
It’s not crazy to leave 5 dbs against 12 personnel. It’s the modern NFL. A lot of teams do that. The saints, rams, chargers… they often do. In today’s game a lot of these Tes are glorified receivers. And offenses still spread you out in 12 personnel often. The issue is that we have little talent at every level. We have maybe 4-5 actually solid starters when healthy on defense. Doesn’t matter what scheme you run. Teams are going to destroy guys like Isiah buggs, Harris, Austin Bryant, etc because they shouldn’t be starting. We don’t have 1 actual starting caliber lb and our safety / slot play may be worse. And amani O doesn’t even make an effort to tackle… which you could get away with if he could cover.
On 3rd & long sure. 1st & 2nd down it is absolutely crazy & dumb AF.
Give me a scenario, against our offense 1st & 2nd down when does it make sense to put a 5th DB on the field if the 2nd TE is C Wright? Which in today’s NFL most 2nd TE’s are C Wright types (blockers). The TE’s that can run & catch are #1’s
It all comes down to your personnel. If you have a dominant D-line you might be able to get away with it, the problem is we don’t have that at all. I see the Rams playing the run often with 6 in the box and only 2 backers. But, they got Aaron freakin Donald up front and can still be run on at times.
When we had Jim Shorts, we often played on 1st and 2nd down with 4 lineman and 2 linebackers with 5 db’s. But we had Suh and Fairley inside creating havoc and a good linebackers in Tulloch and Levy behind them.
We just don’t have anywhere near the horses up front required to run AG’s favorite defensive package. That’s what is so frustrating to me, he keeps running it out there expecting it’s finally going to work. No, we are undersized and over matched and are giving up 5.5 yards per carry for a reason. Zero adjustments.
So you’re telling me AG is dumber than I give him credit for lol.
I might be done watching the team for this year. If I happen to have nothing going on a Sunday maybe I’ll turn the game on, but it’s no longer a priority to make time for them the rest of this season
From what he has shown, unfortunately yes. Now, he doesn’t have much talent to work with. Who in the starting 4-2 front is actually an above average starter? I don’t see any. Alim is decent, Hutch is a rook, Rodrigo is a rook, Brockers blows, Harris is undersized. Yet we keep trying to stop the run with light boxes. We are on pace to give up 2800 rushing yards for the love of God, which I believe will be an all time nfl record.
Completely understand, I turned it off before halftime last week. Brutal.
Is it just me or has LBer actually been the least terrible of the three levels? I get that’s a low bar of course but generally speaking LBers have actually exceeded my expectations. The DL I thought could be pretty good and man have I been wrong.
