Projecting the Lions cost of an Aidan Hutchinson contract extension

As much as I love going after Garrett there’s no way we can do that and extend Hutchinson. And we know lions will take care of Aiden over anyone else.

Yup.

Though I think of the DEs mentioned here in the last couple weeks, Garrett was the only super-high pick.

I’mma trust Brad and be happy for Hutch

Does Garrett require a new deal if traded for? Hutch will get $35 million/year this offseason, but that money doesn’t have to hit the books for a couple years. Goff will have to restructure prior to 2026 anyway, his cap number will almost force their hand. Would Myles sign a short extention? Say 3 years $100 million with a couple void years? By the time the new money kicks in for Hutch… Reader/Anzalone/Monty/Decker should or could all be off the books and replaced with draft picks. If the Eagles can do it, so can the Lions… It MAY cost a player like Jamo, but Garrett is worth that IMO.

I don’t feel that Holmes will think we need Garret , Smith and Hutch will be a top tandem on there own.
I don’t want to give up Jamo or Kerby or any of the guys playing well we draft, that to me is part of who we are.

The way I see it both Hutch and Garrett’s contract will be setting the market for defensive ends. Both will be 35 million or more imo. Everyone is saying Garrett will be getting a new deal when traded which is pretty common.

I agree it’s common… But not a given… Keenan Allen, Carlton Davis, Amari Cooper, Za’darius Smith, Cam Robinson, Devante Adams were all traded in the last year with no new deals :man_shrugging: not saying Garrett shouldn’t or won’t, just the question of IF… I think he will, but with 2 years on his deal left, maybe they can wait an extra year.

Hutch might even be more expensive than Garrett. Cause Hutch is 5 years younger.

Didn’t Adam’s get one when he was traded to Oakland? When a guy like Myles Garrett asks for a trade he’s gonna get paid. Either by the Browns or a new team. 29 years old, maybe the best defensive player in the NFL and already a HOFer. You could be right but I would be absolutely shocked if he doesn’t get a new contract.

It’s the right thing to do… I think the Lions can swing it, but at the expense of the players I mentioned AND two 1sts

Garrett will get an extension for both the team and Garrett.
No team will won’t to trade two 1st rd picks and have Garrett for only 2 seasons.
Those other guys that were traded and not extended did not require premium compensation.
The team would also want cost certainty and to be able to spread it out over many years.
If the team didn’t extend Garrett he probably wouldn’t play the final year without a new contract so it would only be one year at low rate and then who knows what the cost would be.
I doubt if Garrett is traded, but if he is there will be a new contract.

I’m sure Holmes is working to get Hutch (and Kerby) extended before the draft.
If he waits too long Hut h could cost $40M AAV.
Parsons, Hendrickson, and Watt are up now with Garrett & Crosby to follow (or sooner if traded).
Kerby & Hutch will earn contract extensions between $55M-$60M AAV combined.

This is :100:

Both will reset the market with their extensions… Much like Sewell and St Brown did last offseason.

It seems kind of risky paying Hutch like he didn’t have a major injury, which he did. I always worry if they come back the same player.

Clean broken bone/s is about the best injury a player can have and has zero effect on productivity going forward. No worse than an ankle sprain - but like an ankle sprain it takes a while to heal completely.

Looks like any team could do it….
if the Eagles can make it work….

Yea ligament tears are a lot worse than clean breaks. It will probably take him several months to regain his lower body muscle mass though. Comical how fast a big strong quad and calf can turn into a noodle when casted.

But he should be at full strength by April or May.

Right, and long-term - what we care about when giving him a contract - no issues.

He snapped a leg in college and came back strong from it. Ideally his legs will stop snapping now. I’ve heard a healed broken bone is harder to snap!? Not sure how accurate that is.

Somewhat of a myth, apparently.
