I liked fields less than any other qb. I believe i read an article where he had the worst completion percentage of the 5 qbs when it came to his second and third read. Thats telling especially considering the weapons he had. Not hard to be a great qb in college when your first read is always open.
His WR room in college would be a great NFL WR corps. JSN, Chris Olave, and Garrett Wilson would be an amazing top 3 for the Lions (or any team, really). And this same group kept Jameson Williams relegated to a backup role, and had Jeremy Ruckert as a TE.
Run that out against the Purdues, Northwesterns, and Iowas of the world, and yeah, your QB is going to look pretty good!
If you narrow things down by school and then throw in the criteria “star QB” you are going to see a wide mix of schools and none of them are dominating the metric. No school is constantly churning out star QBs. You said Miami has been turning out hall of fame QBs, but they only have 1…Jim Kelly. After that you have guys like Vinny Testaverde and Bernie Kosar. Stanford is an outlier because they produced John Elway and Andrew Luck.
I spent some time writing down all of the top QBs I could think of and where they went to school. I expected the top schools to have a bunch of names, so I was concerned the most about finding some needles in the haystack that people didn’t think of as NFL QB producing schools. I was suprised at what I found. Transfers cloud the results a little bit. I will throw out an abbreviated version. Notice how many different schools are represented.

That is a very spread out list and that’s kinda what I was getting at. No particular school has a pipeline of great QBs….so to single out Ohio State QBs as ones to steer clear of I find myself puzzled because there isn’t a school(s) who has a clear better track record of successful QBs, well except that Miami did produce some guys who had success and one HOF
The Lions sucked and their coaching was not great but Stafford was always one of their better players and still developed his game. Is Fields getting better?
I would love either one as my backup. These kind of guys can win games in a pinch with their legs. When you aren’t worried about their long term outlook
Just wanted to point out that Russell Wilson graduated from NC State and was a graduate transfer to Wisconsin. You did say that transfers clouded things a bit.
If you can believe Wikipedia, Fields got a 29 on his ACT, so intelligence shouldn’t be an issue. I don’t imagine a lot of football players get 29 on the ACT. He just doesn’t seem to have football intelligence.
Which is kinda my point from a different angle. Why keep drafting a system QB in the first round just because they didn’t flop when surrounded by all star talent?
Andre Ware and David Klingler. Gaudy numbers at Houston, both get selected high, both flop.
Marc Sanchez and Matt Leinart. There are plenty of examples of NFL scouts getting absolutely silly over the QB kryptonite of system QB’s.
Alabama and Ohio State are just the latest craze in this vein.
Jeff Tedford coached Trent Dilfer, Joey Harrington, Akili Smith, and Kyle Boller, let that sink in and marinate for the minute that deserves.
So your every instinct should say to steer clear, right? Right.
That’s probably why everyone passed on Aaron Rodgers until the 24th pick.
Every QB needs to be evaluated in an independent vacuum absent of prejudice both positive and negative. That being said, an institution that produces similar performing alumni needs prospects to be evaluated for the kryptonite system factor. Fields has yet to show signs of personal growth as a QB, just my opinion, but I see him as soon justifying his place on this list…Dwayne Haskins, Cardale Jones, Terrelle Pryor & Troy Smith.
