Didn’t have a problem with the boos, but giving him the finger was a bit much, I thought. I was like, really dude?!?
(Although, it was my avatar - briefly)
I think a big part of it was this fan base deciding to support Jared Goff. Despite all of his success everywhere he’s been, he is perpetually disparaged by a large part of the fanbase up till then, and the media still
He walked through adversity, put on his big boy pants, and helped win us the division. Cheering for the quarterback he was traded for would be like giving googly eyes to your ex-girlfriend while standing next to your new girlfriend
Man, DuhLyins, I love that confession and honesty. Life is complex and every moment doesn’t reflect our best selves.
On the other hand, we HAD to win that game and it was a metaphorical street fight for the survival of our football psyches. People do things in football piles that they wouldn’t be proud of in other circumstances. And some like Suh do them in full view.
So I’ll give that fan a little slack in that moment.
That’s incidental in my book lol.
This is such a nothing burger.
There was no way in hell Stafford was getting his flowers at the first playoff game in Detroit in decades. He asked to leave and he was the enemy on the path to success.
Beyond that, socially, it has always been Detroit vs. Everybody. Period. The city is the outcast town of America who everyone has dunked on since the loss of the auto industry. Detroit has been mocked, laughed at, and swept aside as ‘broken’ by the majority of the rest of the country.
Fans in Detroit and Michigan saw that same story again in Jared Goff and rallied behind him HARD. There is so much more behind the ‘JARED GOFF’ chants than simply supporting a QB. It was a rallying cry that embodied the story of an entire city.
So no, no one gives a ■■■■ if Matt Stafford got booed. The story was never about him.
I’ll take mine with cheese.
BTW, is Nothing Burger a chain? It should be. Liquid Death has proven that the modern consumer will pay for bunk with edgy/sardonic marketing attached to it.
It’s a vegan restaurant.
I miss all of the great comedians we used to have: Farley, Nielsen, Carrey, etc. The world is a lot less funny.
Can’t even make good comedies anymore… people are too soft and offended by everything. Most of the best comedies of all time couldn’t even be made today sadly.
We ended up getting him anyways for a season, as a backup.
I was embarrassed for Detroit when they booed him. But I get it. There is no excuse when he comes to town this season though.
???
???
They’re playing Week 1.
His replacement is going to be showered with love and, once again, he’ll be reminded that he’s been replaced. This is natural.
Again, there will be a time for some Stafford appreciation, but it’s not going to be Week 1 2024.
If he gets plastered into the turf, lays unconscious for a few minutes, then finally makes it to his feet and walks off the field, there will be tremendous cheering.
There will HAVE to be a component where his presence on the field has no bearing on this team’s success. If we were playing the Rams in the preseason, he’d be cheered.
Had Steve Yzerman left Detroit to finish out the last third of his career elsewhere, you can bet he’d have received the same treatment. It’s sports. There are a lot of fans that respect the hell out of Stafford and what he and his family built here, but as long as he’s pointing his rifle at our team, we’re going to boo him accordingly.
I don’t think its too much to ask for an applause when his name is announced at the beginning? Its just a thank you, its not that they are rooting for him. Its what I call class. Of course I expect a louder cheer for Goff.
I want more electricity. Save the class for his farewell tour after we’ve already won a SB with Goff.
