It took AG 3 quarters to figure out how to fix it… Branch started flexing down to cover Kupp when he went in motion, he’s a bad match up for Kupp bc Branch is a better athlete. Kupp was much more stationary after that adjustment.
They had an excellent game plan coming into this game.
I was watching the all22 break down and he was saying the same thing. He’s was pretty critical of AG taking so long to figure it out.
This comment right here in my opinion just shows that part of the problem with the defense the last few years is purely talent.
Oh so to shut down Kupp they had to put a more talented player on him. So was it scheme or talent?
I am not attacking you @TouchdownMyPants but rather this whole scheme of the DC verse players is a slippery one. You need absolute athletic units to have a good defense.
McVay uses motion to get information and create mismatches. With Branch moving onto Kupp, you couldn’t identify any change in coverage and you weren’t creating a mismatch. The player has everything to do with the ability to make successful schematic changes. If it’s Iffy moving down, it’s a completely different story.
hmmmm I just am not sure I agreed with this take. AG is not some idiot that can not see what is happening. If the announcers are commenting then the coaches knew way sooner.
I put this more in the area of waiting to make the change. It is like in BB when a players is murdering you so you eventually put your best player on them. It is not that you did not know what you needed to do. It was you were waiting to do it when it was most important and such.
In this case if they had done that in the 1st half then the Rams adjust and find a way to counter. But if you wait until the 4th when they only have a few possessions left, you minimize the chance of the counter happening and you shut him down in winning time.
AG clearly wants to run a heavy man coverage system. He may finally have the horses to do it. Again we need to give him and this defense at least 9 games to get a feel for how they are gelling and what they are all about IMO.
BTW McVay is not a savant. All OCs use motion and also alignments to get a read on the defense.
Interesting discussion by the way. I heard a breakdown with Tom Brady a few years ago where he comments he often found he could get a read on what was happening on some teams by looking at the Dline. But even if you know what the defense is running you still need to execute the routes and catch the ball and such. And make that decision in about 2 seconds or less.
They basically picked-on our rookie CB all game. I mean here’s a crazy f-ing idea, why not have Davis follow Kupp all over the field. Kupp was their only stinking WR, shut him down and Matt’s got nowhere to go.
Last year it was Puka, this year it was Kupp. How about AG figuring out how to stop 1 damn WR?!?!?
Many, many other teams had that same problem stopping those receivers. Sometimes players are just f-ing good. Puka dropped 4 for 105 against last year’s #1 ranked D Cleveland. 5 for 85 against Baltimore. 8 for 154 against the Steelers. 15 for 147 against SF! Those are basically last year’s best defenses.
And Kupp has pretty much shredded anyone and everyone.
Always look for way to improve…. But in the end we won….
This will be fixed for the playoffs imho
He used motion to figure out if it was man or zone. Fortunately the headset mike is turned off before the motion begins. Stafford has the smarts to adjust but lessor QB’s won’t.
I wonder if teams have someone watching the broadcst
Shit they ran the quick out a ton
Pressure beaters. He knew the preferred matchup and spacing pre-snap every snap (except 1 ).
A. It tells you how good their plan was
B. It tells you how good Stafford is
C. It tells you how predictable AG is.
That last one scares me. If all of his variation and disguise is slowing the development of his own players WITHOUT complicating life for the opponent, we have a major problem.
You keep an elite route runner like Kupp to under 8ypc, I’m a happy camper.
Other than the fact that it’s kind of inconvenient for the players, I see no reason schematically not to run pre-snap motion on every single play.
Yea I left a few comments. With a new secondary and starting a rookie at CB I’m not sure you are going to fool Stafford and McVay. Holding them to 20 points was a pretty good showing imo.
