This is behind a paywall but I know many of you get the Athletic.
It ranks the LAChargers first, Falcons second. Panthers last because of ownership.
Carrol to LAC makes too much sense, no?

Pat Kirwan says that being a 2nd class team in a city as well as tenant in someone else’s building is problematic. He worked for the Jets, so he knows the special challenges it comes with. Being in LA adds another layer of challenges, as people have other things to entertain them. The Chargers don’t have a home field advantage and never will. Every year they have at least 8 guaranteed road games and then the rest of the schedule is a mix of road games and neutral site games. I say all of that to say that I don’t see the Chargers gig nearly as favorably as others do.
On the flipside I view the Panthers job more favorably than others. BUT, it comes with a qualification. IF a coach thinks highly of himself and doesn’t want money to be an impediment to hiring the right staff, having the right facilities, having the right nutritional program, etc…the Panthers job is perfect. Tepper meddles but he also opens his wallet. A coach can go there and get whatever he needs without getting outbid for staff or forced to keep underperformers. The biggest “issue” I see with the Panthers job is that it comes with Bryce Young. I simply don’t believe in the kid and I illustrated why during the draft process.
I have felt that its time for the Falcons to get a coach who taps into the city of Atlanta. Some of their best times were with Mike Vick and then the Deion Sanders/Jerry Glanville days. They need someone who embraces flash and celebrities. It just fits them. Key pieces of the team are already in place, and the owner is willing to spend money.
While I think Tepper is the biggest issue, I don’t believe in Young either. That’s an albatross a new coach starts out with.
I would say, the OC and DC jobs in Detroit have to be very high on anybody’s list.
No?
I hope AG doesn’t hurt himself in the interviews. Despite his NFLPA grade, he can get snippy with the press. Hope he interviews better than his pressers.
Good take.
In other words, the opposite of Arthur Smith.
Shows how much I knew. I thought Smith, Staley and Saleh were the best choices for our job 3 years ago. Two are gone already and one is in danger territory.
If the Jets get rid of Saleh they will regret it for the next 10 years. The Jets need better QB scouts and luck, NOT a new head coach.
The coaching on the offensive side of the ball is not good. Right now a QB has to go in and show them how to run an offense. That’s not a good thing. Saleh needs a “head coach” for the offense that he can trust. I realize why they have dingleshit as their OC, but that guy clearly doesn’t have what it takes. They need to hire Darrell Bevell or someone they consider even better.
The Criteria for the rankings:
The eight current openings will appeal for different reasons to different candidates. I’ve ranked these vacancies below using three basic criteria: likelihood of winning in the first two seasons, whether winning the division is realistic and to what degree ownership flaws might be fatal. I’m not putting much weight into salary-cap space because it can be created or manipulated, and because the big challenge is finding good players, not finding the resources to sign them.
…
If the criteria seems a bit short-sighted, that’s because coaches, unlike general managers, frequently must win quickly to keep their jobs. There’s less standing between them and the product on the field. Blame finds them faster.
Have to wonder if DC will want former players for his open positions? And if he has talent from within to promote.
If the Chargers get good coaching and Herbert stats held that they’ll make the playoffs making that a desirable job. The other two are meh at best. You don’t get the Chargers job I’d wait a year (although the Falcons do play in a lousy division).
I remember watching a video with footage of Panthers draft discussions. I think it was year 2 of that regime. 2021 draft IIRC. Anyways, in the footage Tepper was acting like a de facto personnel guy. Using scouting jargon and just really interjecting his opinions about various prospects. Rhule was a good sport about it but man did that seem like a red flag.
In the Panthers facility Tepper remodeled to put his office, the head coaches office and the GMs office side by side. He said they make all personnel decisions together. So your observation is spot on.
Jerod Mayo is now 100%
Marvin Lewis part of the Raiders staff.
Marvin Lewis part of the Raiders staff.
Love that hire.
Yep, stud QB in LA that’s young and signed long term. That’s gonna be the preferred destination for a veteran coach. Also, Herbert is a QB that a new O won’t screw up.
Any 2nd choice destination would be where the coach has a hand in picking his next QB via FA or draft year 1.
Ownership preference is inconsequential with a 6 year contract and/or ownership’s history of still paying a fired coach years after they get fired.
If the Jets get rid of Saleh they will regret it for the next 10 years.
I don’t think that Saleh realizes that he is also head coach for the offense as well. He treats one side of the ball as the poor stepchild and that’s not a successful approach.
Rumor has it (and Vegas odds back it up) that Harbaugh wants the Chargers job or he will return to Michigan.
