The Wings currently have 72 points and are third in the Atlantic, with more points than 4 other teams that are currently in the playoffs.
The four teams currently out of the playoffs chasing the Wings have either 65 or 63 points. The two teams with 63 points have a game in hand on the Wings, so let’s say for shits and giggles that they all have 65 points. This means that at least two of those teams need to win 3 more games and have 1 OT/SO loss to tie the Wings.
So if the Wings need to go 13-9-2, two of those teams would need to go 16-5-3, just to bring tie breakers into the mix. And of course, the other teams already in the playoffs would have to also avoid losing streaks.
TLDR: The Wings making the playoffs isn’t as hard as you think.

In your scenario in which the Wings miss the playoffs, you are basically saying that every team in the 3-9 slot are going to play slightly better than the Wings, even with many of them playing each other multiple times.
Also, I am aware that Columbus is on a heater. It would be a shame if a two week break was to come along and slow that momentum down for them.

Im not saying its GOING to happen. But that it COULD happen. and based on how the wings have done the last 10 games.
Of that group of 7. Islanders are 2 points worse than the Wings. Every other team is 2-6 points better.
Actually, if you don’t give them magical wins for the games they haven’t played, the Wings have more points than the Islanders, Penguins, Sabres, Bruins and Blue Jackets. Plus, they are tied Montreal, and would get in over them with more regulation wins.
So in that group of 6 that aren’t the Red Wings, 0 out of 6 would be in the playoffs over the Red Wings as of today.
I will continue to look at my Wings mug as being half full.

I focus on the 17 because i want a cup. Not simply a playoff appearance.
Literally my entire life the Wings were elite until 10 years ago.

Realistically, The Wings are not going to be a real competitor for a cup for like 2 more years. They could trade for Robert Thomas and Hamilton/Faulk and still not be good enough to win it all right now, imo. Better chances? Sure, but still a long-shot, imo. Still too young - ■■■■, Larkin has played in only 1 playoff series his entire career and won a single playoff game..10 years ago. These guys will need time to learn how to win tough playoff series. It ain’t happening this year or probably even next.

Thats my whole point tho,
Theres no high level prospects in the pipeline, no more abundance of pick, steve needs to make a move to make this team a solid playoff team NOW so they can be a championship team in a year or 2.
This is the 3rd year in a row they are a bubble team. They have flatlined. What are they waiting for?

Are you serious? They’ve got one of the best farm systems in the league! 2 top end goalies in Cossa and Augustine… Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, Carter Bear, Nate Danielson, Max Plante, Carter Mazur… And a couple of big defensemen in Shai Buium and Williams Wallinder.
The future is super bright for these kids

They are GOOD prospects. Are any of them top 2 line good? Nope.
They need a top 6 forward and a top 3 defender.
