Red Wings Opening Weekend

Figured I’d start something similar to what has been done for the Tigers, where there is a thread each series, but for the Wings, maybe a weekly thread to partake in discussion about the Wings/NHL stuff. I know hockey isn’t as popular, but part of that is because the Wings have been complete poop. This season should be interesting with the infusion of young talent. Only two games for the Wings this week:

Tonight, 7PM, vs Montreal (0-1-0)
Saturday, 7PM vs Toronto (1-0-0)

The Detroit Red Wings play their home opener tonight against the Montreal Canadiens (0-1-0)
Where: Little Caesars Arena
When: 7 p.m.
TV/Radio: FanDuel Sports Network/97.1 FM
Hot: The Red Wings’ decision to promote prospects Axel Sandin Pellikka, Michael Brandsegg-Nygard and speedy Emmitt Finnie has created excitement among Detroit’s fans. Finnie is expected to play with Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond, while Sandin Pellikka will see power play time as a point man. Brandsegg-Nygard has a wicked shot and plays a physical game.
Not: Veteran JT Compher. He’s coming off one of the worst seasons of his career, and the team needs more from him to have an improved chance of making the playoffs.
Spotlight: John Gibson was brought in to bring more consistency to the Detroit goaltending. His career save percentage is .910. If he can be near that number this season, he could be the difference between the Red Wings qualifying for the playoffs or extending their drought.
Absence: James van Riemsdyk is not expected to play. He is still trying to make himself NHL ready after starting training camp late because of family issues.
Story: The Red Wings are trying to avoid missing the playoffs for a 10th consecutive season…Patrick Kane starts the season needing 32 points to pass Mike Modano to become the all-time leading points producer for players born in the United States. He needs eight goals for 500…Erik Gustafsson has cleared waivers and can be sent to Grand Rapids when van Riemsdyk is activated. The Red Wings have eight defensemen.

Detroit Projected Lines
Finnie – Larkin – Raymond
DeBrincat – Kasper – Kane
Copp – Compher – Brandsegg-Nygard
Soderblom– Rasmussen – Appleton

Defensive Pairings
Chiarot – Seider
Edvinsson –Sandin Pellikka
Johansson-Hamonic

Goalie
Gibson (Cam Talbot is the backup)

Any prediction on the Wings season? Feels like this needs to be the season they make the playoffs. Everyone already getting restless (and have been) with the Yzerplan. So excited to see how the kids play tonight.

90 plus points and a playoff team. They missed the playoffs by a razor thin margin last season.

It is statistically improbably that they will be as bad on the PK this year as last year, that’s the margin I see them overcoming.

Excited about the young guys, hope to see ASP’s D game not have too many holes in it. We can already tell he’s a + + in the Ozone

Yeah, I think pairing ASP with Edvinsson is a smart move. Guy has some crazy offensive ability on the back end.

Wish they’d get Mo a real partner. I’d but AlJo with Seider and bump Chairot to 3rd line if it were me.

I think I’m hirer on Chariot than most wings fans, but I get the argument that maybe he shouldn’t be on the top pair.

I just saw the jerseys they’re wearing tonight. They’re pretty sweet.

I’m always partial to the regular jerseys…they’re already classic lol

But AI doesn’t practice.

Lots of talent came on the ice during those intro’s, hopefully they can put it together and play as a team

Best uniforms in Hockey. Change my mind.

Also 3 rookies on the team!

This year im OK not making the playoffs if the kids show improvement. Learning curve.
But after this year. Theres ZERO excuses for Steve.

Wowzer, would like to see that save again

Is it the pads that make our goalie look like a beast, or is he that big?

Both. I think Gibson is 6’3", so he’s a big guy already. You know what they say about big guys…big pads.
