Riley Patterson

I was over on PrideofDetroit.com and in one of their roster battle articles there was a split between Patterson and Siebert being the kicker. That surprised me. Is it really a toss up? I think Patterson looked damn good late in the year I think Siebert may have more leg but Patterson looked calm, consistent and dependable. I’d hate to take a step back from where we were in that department end of year.

I’ve heard the coaches really like Siebert so who knows. I’m with you though, I thought Patterson really stepped up to the challenge and should be the favorite, at least.

Patterson was 13 of 14 on field goals and his only miss was over 50 yards. Also 16 for 16 on extra points. Not bad for a 22 year old.

and I think? the 50+ yarder was bad weather? maybe?

I really liked the kid and thought he earned a longer contract. I mean booming camp kicks are a lot different than live action. Pornstache proved that last year.

I have no idea what to expect here. I liked having “LongBall Prater” on the roster though. I’m trusting Brad, but I do love having a long range dude on the roster.

Agree, but you know the downside I felt with the Lions for so long was always, “well, we always have Prater/Hanson.” They knew they could always get bailed out and get at least 3 because the kickers were money. Not really an indictment of the kicker himself but, I felt like sometimes it led to conservative playcalling earlier than it should’ve because in the back of the coach’s mind they knew they always had 3 after they got within 55 yards.

That was one thing I really liked about all the go for its on 4th down last year, was I felt like Campbell was saying “yes we are in field goal range but we aren’t settling for field goals, we are trying to score touchdowns!” That had to be one aspect of the culture building. No more settling for field goals, go score a TD, and if you don’t next year we are going to find someone who can.

yep… temp was low 40s and some wind.
It came up a little short.

On the bright side… he made the tackle on DK Metcalf when he tried to return the kick.

I also saw a video of Riley in college… and he was kicking some FGs that were still 3/4 of the way up the goal posts as they went thru … from 50+ yards. He has plenty of leg.

Love our coach SO much. Still, would love to have a bomber for last second stuff…especially now that our last second attack fled to LA.

Still love the Fox approach too.

Fox is the end-of-game or half FG bomber if it’s outside of Patterson’s comfort zone. He had college experience kicking FGs, IIRC.

No amount of distance would intimidate him! Dude could punt the length of the field.

You guys all spell Matt Prater really really funny…

Cool little factoid for those interested. Seibert and Patterson are just a couple years apart in age and grew up within 25 miles of each other on the Illinois side of St Louis.

Personally, I think they’re both pretty good Kickers. I know Dorsey spent a 5th round pick on Seibert in his final Browns draft. Who knows? I hope they both make it a really tough decision.

I really am pulling for Patterson, nothing against Seibert but I think Patterson had a tougher road to climb and then was thrown into the fire and performed well. His only miss was a long miss last year.

Additionally, I don’t want us going for field goals so I hope our kicker is consistent yet more or less irrelevant

Seibert was 4/4 today
Patterson was 3/4

Never forget the disasterous stretch of games before Prater signed with the Lions.

I don’t want to see that again. Ever.

I hope whichever kicker they keep, they choose correctly. Continue the tradition of having Murray, Hanson, Prater.

I liked Patterson last year. Brought stability to that position. Hell, keep one, find a way to overpay the other to sit on the practice squad for the year. So he won’t sign with another team if called.

Kickers don’t matter until you don’t have one. Then it’s a clusterfuck.

LOL - that vid is really funny. The “going through puberty” version of him…out of position. Wonder how he punted back then?

@DeadStroke → he’s definitely lifting his head too early. There doesn’t even appear to be wind out there that day. Almost looks like he just has no interest in Kicking… The ball isn’t even in the right position when he’s kicking it. He wants to go smash punts. LOL.
