Hated him as a kid (grew up a SFGiants diehard) but from all accounts he was a delightful and joyful human being and what a player early in his career. Saw an older version of him smack a double off the right center wall and waddle his tubby ass to second.
I saw some videos of him just in the last few weeks. He did not look well. Barely recognized him.
Would’ve been cool had a been able to hang out through the World Series with his Dodgers playing a part. RIP.
Flautas always win in the end
I remember watching some great performances by him, great pitcher and by all accounts a good person.
So dodgers in 4 then
Fernando, Tiant, and Marichal gave kids some fantastic windups to mimic.
All now gone.
Who is left? Dontrelle Willis, Nomo, The Quiz, Tekulve …
More recently Lincecum’s was wild
Also one of the coolest most memorable names in all of baseball lore
Eight complete-game victories in his first eight starts, five of which were shutouts, including a streak of 35 consecutive scoreless innings.
That is totally inappropriate.
I’m 100% sure we’d be pals IRL.
When I was like 26 I was coming out of a long term relationship and serial dating and based where in Chicago I was living, and I guess preferences at the time, I found myself dating a lot of Mexican girls I worked at a small fine dining restaurant so everything got around.
So one day, the owner and executive chef calls me into his office. Based off of prior history this either meant that I was in trouble bc a hostess saw me put a parsnip between my legs and make some joke while quoting Boogie Nights to my line mates or Chef was asking me for some advice about his fiancé that I was throughly unqualified to give.
So Chef says sit down here. I’m thinking “damn, I hope that he’s seen Boogie Nights.” But instead Chef says, “So I hear you’ve been dating quite a few Latinos.” “Sure I guess so, Chef”
So Chef’s posture gets all fatherly and I’m thinking, “this is going to be an awkward conversation about jimmies, isn’t it?”
Chef says, “It’s really important that you heed this advice. Make sure you get to them before the Tamales do.”
“Okay. Is that all, Chef?”
“Yes. Get back to work.”
Sage advice.
