I don’t think enough is made of the fact that she created a model for running the football operation that no other team uses. Holmes and Campbell were hired separately, without either one having any significant input into the hire of the other. Holmes did sit in on the latter stages of the HC hire process but he didn’t drive it and agreed with (or accepted) Sheila, Rod Wood and Spielman’s plan to go with Campbell. There aren’t many or any teams out there where the GM or HC doesn’t have a big say in who gets hired to fill the other job.
It was an incredibly brave thing to do, because it could very easily have been a disaster. You need your GM and HC to be in lockstep, which is why everyone else gets one of them to hire the other one. But she and her team found the right kind of people to make it work, two guys with complimentary attitudes and belief systems, but without huge egos.
She decided to make both those decisions for herself, she took good advice but also probably followed her gut as well. Huge credit to her for all of that.
I felt so bad for her when the crowd booed her during CJ’s ceremony (not that it wasn’t warranted). It would be cool to see a “Sheila” chant at a home game this year.
Very well said and agree. In hindsight they must have had a very good layout of personality traits and qualifications they wanted, because that is hard to take two people who never worked together and throw them together and say get to work. But they did it, and the way Holmes and Campbell speak about each other it’s pretty apparent they have a great working and personal relationship.
Agreed. I mean who picks Dan Campbell out of a lineup of HC prospects, and then finds the right GM for him? Our GM and entire coaching staff were rookies at their new positions.
It’s the equivalent of running a draft and landing a Rodrigo, a Sun God, a Kujo, and “The Problem” ALL in the same draft (and all after other teams passed them over at least 96 times each)! That’s The New Brand of Lions on her watch.
She turned to console CJ, which showed an awareness and understanding that speaks well of her. In that moment I didn’t feel bad for her at all because she kind of “got it”. She was as disappointed in the Quinn era as the fans were.
I actually think that when you bring in 2 guys for different jobs that rely on each other for success its good to have them hired separately. They have to rely on each other vs blaming each other. Getting the right 2 is the trick. That both we’re hungry and new at the job helped.
I think Chris helped a ton with his experience playing and his bother being a 10+ year GM in the league to lean on for advice. Hiring Chris was a huge first step. That happened well before Holmes and Campbell were hired.
Dec 15, 2020 was the date Chris was hired, the 2020 season wasn’t even over. Bevell was the HC at the time. Chris was hired a full month before Holmes or Campbell were ever hired. Interesting really. And then Dorsey was hired 2 weeks after Holmes and Campbell.
Going back and looking at the timeline of events often tells quite the story. @BigNatty - The office linebacker impact right!? haha
“I am humbled and excited about the opportunity to be involved with the franchise that is truly a part of me,” Spielman said in a statement. “The opportunity to work with Rod Wood and every single person in the Lions organization can’t get here fast enough. To Lions fans everywhere, I will do everything in my power to help Mrs. Hamp and the Ford Family achieve their vision of something we can all be proud of.”
-Chris Spielman
If that doesn’t bring a tear to your eye…
THIS is what’s been missing.
THIS is what SHEILA brought to the fans.
THIS is what Brad & Dan embody, represent, & teach.
I think Chris ended up being Rod Wood’s football guy. I don’t see what he’s done besides get to know the players and offer football advice to Rod and company when asked.
