Shemar Stewart WTF?

Hmmm… does his agent understand how rookie contracts in the NFL work?

Not the best first impression to make, but… assuming it get’s done before long, and he performs, that impression shouldn’t linger.

Gotta be a joke right!? He’s an idiot rookie.

Well he was never going to be a lion even if available based on that personality/behavior

And people wonder why teams are tough on kids sometimes in the interview process. They want to find out if their prospects are going to be flaky just like this. There is very little wiggle in a rookie deal and it’s hard to fathom what the hangup could be.

Wait a damn minute.

From what I read, both Shemar Stewart and Demetrius Knight (1st and 2nd round picks) are skipping minicamp. All teams have waivers for their unsigned draft picks, but both of these guys said nope, we are going to wait for our full deal. Cincy’s new defensive core is off to a great start.

“I just decided not to sign those [waiver] papers,” Stewart said, via video from Noe. “I’m doing everything else. It’s just like on-the-field stuff I’m not doing.”

Stewart hopes to sign his contract by Monday to begin the offseason program, saying “it was kind of tough” not to participate on the first day.

“I would love to be a part of the team. I hate being on the sideline looking at everybody else do work,” Stewart said.

Clearly, Shemar.

As Jah was saying, we’ve heard Brad many times say that fans just don’t get to see everything the teams get to see and hear. If this is how Shemar handles his first chance to work with the team and make a good impression, it’s no wonder why the Lions never seemed that interested in him. The biggest concern about Stewart is that he is a workout warrior and athletic freak, but the production wasn’t there. With this kind of work ethic, we may have a hint of why that production never materialized.

There is “very little” wiggle room. But there IS wiggle room. Offsets and the way the signing bonus is paid out are important elements and typical hangups. The Bengals first round pick from last year didn’t sign until July. Jamarr Chase didn’t sign until June. I could see a cheap team like the Bengals delaying the finalization of the contract in order to push out when the cash will come out of their bank account. They just forked over a ton of money on a few of their stars, including the recently signed Tee Higgins.

Remember, not all NFL teams are alike. The Bengals didn’t even have an indoor practice facility until a few years ago. And its not even a “real” indoor facility like the Lions (and many other teams) have. Its just a temporary bubble. And they have to cross a public roadway to get there. During their Super Bowl run, they had to borrow the Cincinatti Bearcats indoor facility to practice in January/February.

Yeah exactly. Without knowing any other details except “rookie holding out” I would’ve assumed it was the bengals. They are the cheapest team in the league and are likely trying to pull some bullshit.

I’m more interested in what these “waivers” are and what exact protections they provide.

I understand they provide protections against injury, but to what level.

If they provide a fully guaranteed payout of my slotted draft slot should I attain a career ending injury, then sure I’ll sign it and participate.

If they just provide a 1 or 2 million payout then I can’t really blame someone from not taking the risk. In fact I’m pretty sure we’ve heard of other draftees doing the same thing. Participate in everything but the on field physical activities until my contract is signed.

I see no problem with what Stewart is doing.

This is exactly what my first thought was… Might as well start your career with the Bengals by holding out, they won’t wanna pay your 2nd contract either.

My first thought was that he’s taking a pay cut to play for the NFL.
That’s happening. They really opened a can of worms when they began paying college players.
Ah, well. Not my clowns, not my circus. They’ll figure it out.

I don’t think the teams would be on the hook for a single dime, so there’s that.

But I would assume they’d have insurance for participating in the combine and all star games etc. that would cover them.

But it’s a fair point, one freak injury and their world gets turned upside down.

Some guys definitely are. 1st round picks unlikely. But mid round picks definitely might make more in college.

20 total 4-3 edges had 6 or more sacks last year…

20 total WRs had more receiving yards than Jamo.

So expecting to have 2 of the top 20 edges and 2 of the top 20 WRs would be almost insane…. Factor in a top 5 RB and maybe a top 5 TE….

The lions were never chasing a sack artist edge this off-season, they just didn’t want to keep telling us that over and over.

I bet less than 3 edges in this class have 6.5 sacks next year.

If Mike Green or Prince Umanmielen get enough snaps I like their chances. But the point is still totally valid.
