I do think this week against the Jets we will have a better idea of what things will look like moving forward.
I had the Lions going 4-1 the first 5 games. What I had hoped was that the defense would not be so awful. I had very little faith that Shep would level up mostly because the Lions did not bring in anyone on the Quality Control side or Advisor to help him get better. A lone dude studying film without an experience master to help discuss the hows and whys is not going to get him there IMO.
I still believe that the issue is scheme and not so much Jimmys and Joes. And that honestly the Jimmys and Joes help cover up for his poor scheme last season. If your scheme only works if half the defense are All Pro caliber you don’t really have much of a scheme.
I have a hard tome explaining my belief. But I will try once again. We the Lions fans spent 50 years believing that this issue was player talent. And I just do not think that has been the issue. We have been able to overcome bad scheme, coaching, front office…ect with amazing talented players. But the issue has always been the coaching and front office.
The defense has a coaching issue plain and simple. I was not a AG fan either. I am a fan of Flores and maybe 10 other DCs in the league. And if MCDC and BH and Sheila want to win they need to fix that issue.
This isn’t a talent issue. Sure, you can always have more great players, but there are too many really good defensive players on this team for the level of defensive performance we’ve seen.
As much as I hate to say it, this reflects pretty poorly on Dan. Shep looked bad enough to be replaced after last season, maybe even worse than Morton. I think most people gave MCDC the benefit of the doubt here, but all signs point to him getting it wrong.
There is a gap between pro bowl player and a bunch of nobodies like our whole secondary aside of Reed.

yeah i dont agree that our depth in the secondary qualify as nobodies. Clark, Izien, and McCreary are solid depth guys. problem is they probably shouldn’t be full time starters and two of them are. Those 3 are a + S/NB 3/4/5 on a contender.
should shep be let go midseason, and for who if yes? It’s too early to say that rupture would help. The bye is our inflection point for what happens after.
I think in almost in any sport the most important factor is coaching. Take a coach like Dan Reeves. Do I think he was the greatest coach ever. No. Not at all. Do I think he was the difference in turning like three franchises around quick? Yes I do. I think he is, to a degree, criminally underrated. He turned around the Giants almost immediately without much change in the roster. People only remember him for the Broncos. He also led Atlanta to the Super Bowl in three seasons (only to lose to Elway and Shanny but I digress).
If this is as far as we get, I will love this run. It was fun. But it will be remembered by not making the tough choice at DC and going out and getting that guy to make the defense good enough to pair with the offense while we still had Ben. But I still have hope for this team. They will play better.
