Since 3rd qtr of saints game

We have given up scores 11/13 times. The only times we didn’t: 61 yard miss fg at the end of regulation against the saints and a dropped third down pass against bills. We did stop the bills at the end of second qtr as well i guess but that’s because they had no time left.

This offense is very good but the defense is very bad. Can’t even blame it on injuries.

Former Defensive Coordinators on the Staff

Kacy Rodgers (Run Game Coordinator / Defensive Line): He has decades of experience coaching the defensive front. Most notably, he served as the NFL Defensive Coordinator for the New York Jets from 2015 to 2018 under head coach Todd Bowles.

Jim O’Neil (Assistant Head Coach / Safeties): He has a highly extensive resume as a coordinator in both pro and college ball. He was an NFL Defensive Coordinator for the Cleveland Browns (2014–2015) and the San Francisco 49ers (2016). He also served as the college Defensive Coordinator for Northwestern University from 2021 to 2022. [1, 2, 3]

31 pts per game is pretty good

Giving up 35.5 pts per game is not good

One of us could do better

We did pretty well tonight especially with three backups on oline. Its tough on the offense when you know your defense won’t get a stop.

We scored 24 in regulation last week. Two short field TDs. We scored 24 prior to the late garbage time TD down 17. If you want to act like the offense is performing up to a true 31 PPG offense cool. In reality we are not. Most importantly we are an offensive powerhouse. Most of our resources are over there. We need to dominate. Nobody expected the D to be great. Everybody knew the secondary was scary without the safeties. And now it’s here and it’s more painful than we were expecting. But we were probably always unrealistic.

Offense 31 PPG 362 ypg. Thats top 5 NFL last year

Defense giving up 460 yards and 35.5ppg thats the worst defense in the NFL the last 5 years

Pretty much all TDs too. That is MUCH worse than having a bunch of FGs in the mix.

Well, prolly not, but they do have two experienced former DC’s on the staff if they decided to demote Shep. I don’t think they’d straight up fire him, but Dan could just say Shep has had terrible injury luck (and he has for sure) while saying he decided to let one of Rodgers or O’Neill take the reins.

I mostly agree with Curious that it’s too early to move on from Shep in 2026. But if they want to they have guys in-house who they can turn to at any point of the season.

We had absolutely zero chance at playing that well on offense and winning in Buffalo against that offense. They were opening their stadium in, pardon me but bumfuck NY where it was, in terms of pageantry, the biggest event in the area in the last century perhaps.

We needed Grade A Lions offense. We got c-. But yes we did deal with that messed up OL. But the secondary is also banged up.

We had two massive flaws to address: OL and secondary. We leaned into the OL. It sounds like we didn’t know the true nature of the charges back when we were preparing for free agency and the draft. And that’s a big failing. But that goes above Dan mostly and certainly goes over the head of Shep.

So we are where we are. We have really bad CB and have injured star safeties who are trying to come back from serious injuries. Do we get both back? Just one? Are they good still? One? Both?

That is the big variable. Bc we do in theory have reinforcements. We couldn’t trade for a more impactful piece than 9/10th pre injury Branch.

The defense is terrible right now, opponents are basically running 7 on 7 with our back 7 and we are getting smoked….go back and watch the 1st half of the saints…only reason we got stops were dropped passes or bad passes

Our offense is basically Gibbs. St Brown and LaPorta and a sprinkle of a few others. I miss the days of Goff hitting 7, 8 or 9 different receivers or the trick plays

I was going to say the same. It’s a 2 man show on offense right now. Jamo hasn’t woken from his offseason haze yet, there’s no 2nd RB and no 3rd WR. The days of the Lions having weapons all over the field seem to be in the past right now and I think the 31 points tonight rang a little hollow, lots of garbage time points when it was a 3 possession game mainly. Obviously defense is the far bigger issue but this offense isn’t good enough, like it was 2-3 years ago, to overcome a porous defense.

We need week 1 with Jamo catching the ball. That probably is a game where we score 38 in regulation if that’s the case. Got to get him out of this mini slump.

We are so lucky to be 1-1.
