On a team depleted at the CB position.
Even Abney was inactive against Buffalo.

Thats a very fair question. I was under the impression that he was having a descent camp. At least good enough to be active on Sundays.

If we knew why some teams had him completely scratched from their draft boards, which I know some did. That would probably help us understand more. Usually one of two reasons
A. Long term injury risk/medical
B. Character concerns

Considering he’s barely played football I would imagine it’s a trust issue with the coaches. But we are having so much miscommunication anyways, why not give Rake a shot. What’s the worst that can happen? He gets injured again and then just move on.

To answer the question seriously, I think the answer is “yes”.
Abney being inactive I somewhat understand. Abney has been playing slot, and that was Izien’s intended position. Basically we swapped Abney for Izien.
For outside corner though, I think we may actually have the scenario where even as bad as Rock has been getting picked on, the coaches think it would be worse with Rake. Judging from what we saw in the preseason, they might be right. Rake was struggling against fringe NFL guys.
It is possible (hopeful?) that the Lions are keeping him off the field because he is involved in a trade talk for Porter or someone else, and they don’t want to risk injury. My gut says, they are more scared to play him because A) he could get hurt and B) He would tank any even miniscule trade value he has.

I liked Rake as a player and the 2nd round is exactly where I expected him to be drafted. I did not like us drafting him after we gave up a 3rd for CD3 and then traded up to get Terrion in the first. If he is healthy I see no reason why he should not get a chance. I’d also like to see Whiteside get some run. He looked good for the limited snaps he got last year.
