I… Um… Does anyone in the Steelers’ front office follow the news?

Im sure its a minimal contract with a bunch of offset language in the event of suspension etc

They can deal with his lack of coverage skills.

And the Lions salary cap claims just got muddied. It’s a rear view story worthy of popcorn that probably won’t be resolved until after our Super Bowl win.

Tomlin was on record saying that he wanted to see more violence out of next year’s Steelers defense.

The contract that Sutton signs might tell us how his agent feels about the Lions cutting him. If it’s for more than the vet minimum, they likely feel that they will lose out on any grievance that they have filed against the Lions. If it’s for the vet minimum, they likely feel they have a good shot at having the voids overturned by an arbitrator (or maybe there just wasn’t a market for him).

Yep. We reacted immediately before letting things play out with the charges. It happens again and again. Duke Lacrosse, the Bill’s Punter, Jalen Carter. Then it ends up being either a complete fabrication or in this case a freaking Misdemeanor charge. So we are eating the cost and the Steelers are reaping the rewards of our quick trigger.

Now all that said, was I a fan of Sutton’s play? Nope. Was he worth his contract? Heck no. Am I happier with our secondary today with Sutton not in it? Yep. But the fact is we chose appearances over cap implications and in hindsight maybe we should have let the process play out a little bit and “suspended him” showing you are not happy with a female violence situation, but being savvy enough to let things play out before cutting the guy and taking the financial hit.

So, it sounds like Detroit got the Cam shaft…

I don’t think it was all on Sutton and his agent. The Steelers may not have been willing to pay more than the minimum.
As you indicated. The contract will tell a lot.

Sutton had a warrant out for his arrest, and he was not going to immediately turn himself in.
I don’t think the Lions were wrong for releasing him.
There could have been a nationwide manhunt going on for your player.

According to multiple reports it is indeed for Vet Minimum

So either they feel confident in their position on the grievance or Sutton was such damaged goods he went from an $11M/yr player to a $1M/yr player.

Maybe we don’t have a strong case on the voiding of the guarantees.

Gonna take a while before we hear ANYTHING about the void.

But at this point i DOUBT the lions will get that money back.

Charges were decreased to misdemeanor. No jail time. Doing counseling.

As weak as the players union is, i dont think the NFL has enough to stand on to do anything

The league hasn’t really had their say yet. I would be surprised if Goodell didn’t suspend him at least one game.

Cam was terrible DB

The Lions have a zero tolerance policy for domestic violence. Zero tolerance regardless if its a misdemeanor or a felony. I feel confident that the cap savings was an afterthought in the process.

Apparently, Pittsburgh does not have the same policy.

Im not worried about the money and i dont think the lions are either.
$2.18M this year
$6.54M in 2025.

If the Lions don’t win the grievance, the $2.18M dead cap will become $12.68M.

Ouch!!!
