Something to consider about John Dorsey's influence

As the draft debates heat up, I thought it might be good to take a step back and consider how John Dorsey has added his own flavor to the Lions front office.

With discussions about drafting yet another Tight End reaching a fever pitch, you hear Kelce’s name come up alot while failing to connect that the man who drafted him is sitting in our front office.

Indeed, along with Chris Jones, Marcus Peters, Tyreek Hill, Kareem Hunt, and a host of others, John Dorsey knows his business, and keeps his cards close to his vest.

Here’s a recount of how Dorsey landed Patrick Mahomes on draft night…

Dorsey has never shied away from red flag character issues either. The aforementioned Peters, Hill, and Hunt all had concerns which dropped them into Dorsey’s lap.It makes his marriage with the Lions a bit of an odd one, but so far so good.

Dorsey did get sucked in by Baker Mayfield, and his tenure in Cleveland was quite a bit less stellar than his run in KC.

In his year of consulting with the Eagles saw them draft Jalen Hurts.

His talent as an evaluator is well established, and his savvy working the draft board is respectable. I can’t help but wonder if he isn’t aiding Holmes in a clandestine interest that’s going to shock us all come draft day.

Interesting. The way our roster is right now, in terms of competitiveness, talent, & depth…combined with the way we are building…as well as how good at acquiring new talent we appear to be…this franchise could afford 2 firsts+ a third and still be quite competitive until the young’n develops.

27 to 10 for 2 firsts & a third
I am a huge fan of compiling future picks, when at all possible.
With Campbell running the show, we are always going to be very competitive.

This year starts the violent overthrow of the NFCN

Ahhhh shit. Great post @TCLion !

Loved reading this story. The last 2 years have been the best years of being a Lions fan since 1970. Didn’t enjoy it like I have now, due to I was just 7 years old.
My brother passed away in 2007, and he would have been ecstatic with the shape of the Lions are currently in.

Thanks again my man for sharing this story!!!

So Dorsey got fired 4 months after drafting Mahomes? And then replaced by the guy that followed Andy Reid around? This puts my view of the Chiefs recent draft moves into a different perspective.

You gotta love Chicago, bless their hearts. They took Tribisky ahead of Mahomes.
Two RB’s were taken in front of Mahomes (top 10), too.

you can call me a baker lover if you will

but that man got ■■■■■■ hard, like 4 OC’s in his entire tenure in Cleveland, with 3-4 different offensive systems.

He ■■■■■■ up by playing through his shoulder injury, if he didnt do doubt, no doubt they dont trade for Deshaun, but both him and the coaching staff ■■■■■■ up (They should have forced him to sit for the year, yes its a wash sadly, but they still had a couple years of contention with the core).

I do feel bad for him, he did himself ■■■■ up, but the Org did no favors for him.

Thanks for this post as I honestly makes me feel better about any QB we take or don’t take!!

I think the Front Office once a weakness is now a strength. With individuals such as Dorsey, Spielman & Fox, to advise Holmes, we are headed into a successful era, finally!

True, however when Carolina released him, we never put a claim in on him either. Either way, I think he’s somewhat broken.

Or a TE too. Between Holmes and Dorsey they have had a dab hand in drafting Goff, Mahomes, Mayfield and Hurts for QB’S
For TE’S Kelce, O"Shaughnessy, Higbee, Everett and together Mitchell. If they take the plunge on either position, I think they’ve earned the benefit of the doubt.

I’d like to thank everyone for the positive feedback

Dorsey has been part of a front office that drafted Aaron Rodgers, Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes. Struck out on Baker, but shit he’s been involved with drafting some of the best QB’s to ever play the game. Might want to listen to him when he speaks on QB’s.

Don’t forget Rodgers. Dorsey was the Director of college scouting for the packers for 11 years before becoming the Chiefs GM. He’s also won 2 super bowls. Dude was an outstanding hire.

Wasn’t there rumors about Dorsey leaving after the draft last year? I’m glad he didn’t, but I do wonder what happened and why he decided to stay. He’s a great resource alongside Holmes.

Yea it was mentioned on some podcast that he might be leaving, but was never actually reported by any credible source. Glad he’s still here as well. This will be year 3 working with the Bald Villain.

And if we did draft a first round QB, I’d feel pretty good about Dorsey being heavily involved in that decision based on his hit rate with 1st round QB’s.

Good post.
I respect Dorsey.
But Brad Holmes is the shot caller on this team.
Dorsey is one of a dozen key employees he listens to re: the draft.
I think studying the boss is more likely to tell us what the boss might do.

Dorsey brings experience to the room, but Brad is clearly comfortable in who he is. It’s Brad’s front office.

Wasn’t there a story about Brad being ready to pull the trigger … giving up a lot to trade up and get Sewell, and Dorsey stepped in and told him to let the draft come to him? I’ve heard something to this effect from a couple of different sources, one of them being Brad.

He’s definitely helped BH get a handle on some of the higher level GM decisions that is for sure. BH was obviously already competent at the evaluation type work he did with the Rams for a long time.

I heard it was Levi, but yeah

I have no doubt Dorsey’s opinion carries significant weight with Holmes

I think it was both. Not that he had the deal worked out and Dorsey ripped up the paperwork before it could be faxed to the league or anything like that. But Brad said he was anxious and was ready to have a serious discussion about making the move when Dorsey calmed him down and told him to be patient.

I heard Les Snead was going to write a book on patiently building a team, but abandoned the project because it was taking too long.
