Sounds like the NFL is going to an 18 game schedule soon

So at the draft Roger made it sound like the NFL is going to an 18 game regular season soon. And looking at future opponents looks like 2025.

It will be a 20 week season with 2 byes and 18 games. And 2 preseason games.

So what would the schedule be?

(Sundays)
8/3/25 HOF game
8/10/25 Preseason week 1
8/17/25 Preseason week 2
8/24/25 53 man cut down
8/31/25 week 1
Ect ect
1/11/26 week 20
1/18/26 wild card
1/25/26 division
2/1/26 conference
2/8/25 probowl
2/15/25 (presidents day weekend) superbowl

Opponents? (Based on this years standings)

HOME.
Div. GB, MIN, CHI
NFC E. NYG, DAL
AFC N. CLE, PIT
NFC S champ. TB
AFC S or E champ. HOU or BUF

AWAY
Div. GB, MIN, CHI
NFC E. PHI, WAS
AFC N BAL, CIN
NFC W. Champ. SF
AFC W. Champ. KC

YIKES thats a tough schedule with a lot of out door games.

They can’t change the schedule until the current CBA expires in 2030, so the earliest they can add an 18th game is 2031.

Im sure they can ratify it at any time with a vote.

Hence why they are going to 8 international games in 2025 because they voted during the season this year.

Then it just comes down to buying out tv deals and working out money distribution. Which would just involve a buyout. Which the NFL is swimming and money. Im sure there will be some push back from the union but again. Nothing money can’t handle

The nfl isnt afraid of spending hundreds of millions to make billions

No, they’d have to renegotiate the CBA again and that’s not happening, it won’t get done until 2031. But it will get done, the NFLPA is extremely weak and will once again fold like a cheap suit at the negotiation table.

Garbage. More games only weakens the meaning.
“But we need to manufacture someone to beat some of these single season records!”

Protect those players

The Lions themselves shared their opponents next year on the road. They have three outdoor games next year. 4 or 5 if AZ or HOU decide to open their roof (which could depend on rain). That’s 12 indoors at worst and could be 14. That’s why one of the concerns is making sure the kicker - whoever that might be - is money indoors.

I’m more concerned about injuries. 18 games is a lot to put the body through. Both the roster size needs to increase and practice squad. Maybe add a couple of protected PS players that can’t be poached.

That’s why this can’t and won’t happen until at least 2031.
The entire CBA would have to be renegotiated and the NFLPA, as weak as it is, would have to get a lot in return. Extra bye, expanded rosters, and of course, more money. It won’t be an easy negotiation but it will happen as greed will win out on both sides. The owners and players will get more money and the fans will get more meaningful football.

Yea reading the few articles that were saying as soon as 2025 didnt take that into account .

It will be 2031.

And yes they will have to increase the Roster to say 60.
And PS to say 20.

So from 69 to 80. The extra money generated from the extra games will boost the salary cap to help pay for that.

Also a 2nd bye week is huge! Players have been begging for that back for a very long time

What I have never understood is why there is bye weeks from week 5-14? Why not have all bye weeks within a 4 week period during weeks 7-10 or 8-11? It is not like they would run out of games to show. Hell most weeks unless you have NFL Sunday ticket, you are not watching a TEN-JAX game unless you live in the small regional area that that kind of game might fall under if there is 10 other games in that time window.

But the NFL in all its money making greed is really kind of stupid when it comes to this.

Better expand the roster to a lot more than 53.

There multiple ideas on the table.

One is weeks 5-8 and 12,13, 15,16 (week 14 is thanksgiving) are the 2 bye windows.
But then only 12 games are on those weeks. Currently the nfl doesnt allow more than 6. But it could work.

Another is
NO one has byes
Weeks 1-4 and 17-20 (first and last 4 weeks)

And then everyone has byes in those middle 11 weeks. (11 because everyone plays thanksgiving weekend)

And you must have a minimum of 5 games between your 2 byes.

But they will iron that out.

Ok fixed the schedule for 2031. When the new contract is in.

(Sundays)
8/3/31 HOF game
8/10/31 Preseason week 1
8/17/31 Preseason week 2
8/24/31 53+ man cut down
8/31/31 week 1 (Labor Day weekend)
Ect ect
1/11/32 week 20
1/18/32 wild card
1/25/32 division
2/1/32 conference
2/8/32 probowl
2/15/32 (presidents day weekend) superbowl

Opponents.

HOME.
GB, CHI, MIN
DAL, NYG,
LV, DEN
NFC South, AFC East (TB, BUF)

AWAY
GB, CHI, MIN
PHI, WAS,
KC, LAC
NFC West, AFC North (SF, BAL)

So as for Roster expansion i think that needs to happen.

60 for Active Roster
20 for Practice squad
~100 Players for preseason

And the cap wouldn’t need to go up that much to pay for that.

The average NFL player makes 1.3% of the total cap. So this year will be around $3.3M.

So increase the cap by at MOST. 23M for those 7 roster players 4 extra PS players.

So that would be give or take $278M vs the 245M for this year. Again the extra 2 weeks of regular season games will more than help that out.

So for 2031. The cap is expected to be $388M.
Make it $422M for the new format.

More games…more money. The end.

PS player safety matters more than anything

That would not be enough for the NFLPA.
That increase only pays for the additional roster spots. It is great to add more jobs for marginal players but what does it do for guys already in the league?
They would be making similar money for an extra game. Why would a player agree to that?
You would have to add 1/17 (roughly 6%) for the extra game on the top before you account for the extra roster spots.

Ok true. Forgot about the extra game. Hold on.
So. 3.3m is this years average. Or 194k per game. X18. Is 3.49M x 60.
So roughly 290M. Vs 255.4m for this year. A roughly 13.5% increase

So for 2031.
Est. 388m
438m With the expansion.
