While I love the article and both writers, it should be noted that Conor Orr is as diehard a Lions fan as anyone on here. That doesn’t make his points any less salient, but he’s probably viewing things through glasses with just a slight tint of Honolulu blue. You could imagine how most of us would respond to that assignment.
I agree, and I thought I recognized that name. Of course a lot of us fans would write articles saying this is our year. Hell, Dallas has been recycling the same article for 30 years now. The fact that someone wrote an article picking the Detroit Lions to win the Super Bowl, and the premier major sports publication actually put it on their season opening cover, without it being an April Fools Joke? These are different times we are living in.
I actually didn’t even realize they still released the magazine. I remember reading something about it shutting down, or at least I dreamed I did anyway.
SI has only picked one Super Bowl winner correct in the previous 23 years dating to 2000: the 2004 New England Patriots. We acknowledge it is very hard to pick the winner of the ultimate game, and the runner-up.
SI correctly predicted one of the two teams to make the Super Bowl five other times. In total, there were 6-for-48 on correctly picking a team to reach the Super Bowl.
Here’s a look at SI’s predictions and the actual outcomes since the 2000 NFL season.

Ed Masry to SI when it comes to picking Super Bowl winners and contestants;
Somethings wrong with that list. I have an issue from the Caldwell years where they picked the Lions. It’s packed away in a box somewhere because I recently moved.
