Any player, Any Era. Build a squad to match up against another’s, or build your own squad for others to compete against. I’ll go Offense to start –
QB - Michael Vick
RB - Jim Brown
FB - Mike Alstott
WR - Calvin Johnson
WR - Terrell Owens
TE - Tony Gonzalez
LT - Anthony Munoz
LG - Bruce Matthews
C - Mike Webster
RG - Larry Allen
RT - Trent Williams
What would you put on the field to stop this Offense?
Lb - Lawrence Taylor
De - Reggie White
Db - Deion Sanders
DT - Joe Green
DT - Aaron Donald
Fs - Ed Reed
Ss - Ronnie Lott
Db - Darelle Revis
Lb - Ray Lewis
De - Julius Peppers
Lb - Derrick Brooks (to account for Vick)
CJ is by far the most difficult match-up. I need to hope LT is forcing some bad throws, and/or Ronnie Lott ends T Owens career early in the game… then CJ gets bracketed.
I feel like your power run game would do ok regardless of who I had at NT.
Valid question, it was a different game back then. My question would be – to hurt someone, would you first not have to catch the player? 4.3 in the 70’s would be the equivalent of a 130 MPH fastball in todays baseball game. And look at the 5 “grubbers” up front, nasty in any era of football. (<–And if someone knows this reference I might fall out of my chair)
Agree. I think it was Belichik who said Ed Reed was by far the best safety he’d ever seen. But he’s definitely not as scary as many other safeties, like Taylor.
Having Larry Allen, Mike Allstot and Jim Brown running at you would be interesting, to say the least.
DE - Reggie White
DE - Michael Strahan
DT - Cortez Kennedy
DT - Jon Randle
LB - Derrick Brooks
LB - Ray Lewis
LB - Brian Urlacher
CB - Charles Woodson
CB - Rod Woodson
S - Sean Taylor
S - Steve Atwater
Except, they didn’t quite worry about late hits back then. You got extra steps to get there with no call. Could land on him, no call. Could suplex him, no call. Then there’s just late hitting him for the fun of it.
There is a reason the rules have changes to protect QBs. Most QBs back then didn’t wear any kind of flack jacket until already injured. The pads are so much better now.
Let Vick stare into Singletary’s eyes with the old rules…
I’m not sure about pairing Urlacher and Lewis, but I love the Safety tandem. LOVE it.
We have to scrap Urlacher based on principal alone. Perhaps Joe Schmidt or even Kevin Greene would be apropos.
Can’t argue against Deion. Greatest cover corner I ever saw. But I was going for the “fear for my life Defense” and Deion just didn’t give off that vibe on the field.
First 3 minutes of the video is an absolute gem of a football highlight. Well worth the watch of Larry Allen dominating the Colts Defense during one drive. (Plus John Madden !!!)
Then this…Reggie White throws Larry Allen like a rag-doll. LINK 0:20 second clip
