I am not a football coach, but here is a good article that explains the triangle read concepts for both the offensive side and what they are trying to do, and what the defense is seeing, keying on and what they are trying to do.
As far as stacking back, I think Glenn is talking about the linebackers needing to not only play up on the line as a pure pass rusher, but being able to also drop back and play in a traditional 4-3 lineup, where the linebackers line up between each defensive lineman’s gap.
The “Stack” position he’s talking about is lining up as an off-ball linebacker.
I believe they call it a stack LB because they’re tasked with filling gaps, not taking on linemen (unless it’s a pulling lead-blocker on a run), but I know at least 1 poster here would disagree with that.
AG mentioning those terms highlights the challenge of the SAM position. On one snap he’s lined up on the LOS in what looks and feels very much like a true 3-4 defense. On another snap he’s lined up off the ball in what looks like a 4-3 defense. The ability to focus, read keys and react is different, based on that alignment. And, oh, by the way, you’re splitting your prep time between Shepherd in the LB room and Williams in the DL room.
I always coached my linebackers to look for keys presnap. Olinemen often give plays away early based on their eyes and foot placement. Often a better presnap read from motion or formation brings you to the ball, just watching the oline
Dial in to your gap responsibility… If you try to be a hero and the whole defense has to compensate for ur glory shot… Then were screwed.
But offenses are so smart these days though, giving linebackers eye candy to screw with coach cues happens often.
I miss coaching… But the kids parents made it so toxic. Sad.
As a retired teacher, coach, athletic director and principal I’m often asked if I miss it. The honest answer is I miss the kids, but I don’t miss know it all asshat parents. Now that I have a grandson starting to play football I often get the itch to assist, but it usually goes away very fast when I hear parents starting to complain about coaches doing it wrong.
For sure. Hockey parents are the worst up here in Ontario, everyone thinks little 7 year old Timmy is going to be the next NHL superstar. The pressure put on a lot of the kids makes them want to quit.
