Stingley Jr. agree on three-year, $90 million deal to make him league's highest-paid DB

Joseph’s cost just went up

Did it? There’s typically a pretty clear delineation between S and CB from a negotiating standpoint (franchise tag numbers, 5th year options, etc…). If anything I look at it as we got Reed for a song.

I use to think that it was the team that was delaying signing an extension. I was wrong. It’s all on the players. A benefit to being last. You can become the highest paid player at the position.

As to CB/S, many teams view them as interchangeable. There are a few exceptions, but overall, they move around.

Kerby im ok with letting go. Full safety is getting too expensive in the NFL.
Maybe tag him for one more year.

But if i HAD to pick between branch and kerby its branch 100%

3 yrs/90 mil?!??

Yeah, nickels can make that argument (so maybe Branch), but deep safeties can’t really do that, and that’s what Kerby is. And even nickel has its own payment level thus far.

It’s why TEs try to argue they’re actually WRs (and some are), or OL try to argue they’re OTs. The payment structure is very different based on the minutiae of the position.

Counterpoint:

Kerby less likely for injury regression. Branch hits so hard I could see him having a shorter prime.

For a few months.

I don’t think the Stingley contract has much impact on the Kerby negotiations.
I think the most impact is the trend of young players betting on themselves with the shorter term.
Kerby will get a top of market contract between $22M-$25M AAV.
The sooner it gets done the lower the number.
I hope it is done before Kyle Hamilton.
Since Hamilton has a 5th yr option I hope Baltimore chooses to wait a bit on his extension and save the Lions a few million.

I am less concerned about how this affects the contracts of Safety and more about what this means for CBs in the future. I fully believe that Joseph and Branch are going to be highly paid Safeties for the Lions. So far we have gotten by with value CBs. With the market doing what it is doing, we should wonder how long that could last.

The Lions may have to transition to playing the comp bean game by the time Arnold/Rake come due.

Something will have to give…

You are, of course, right.

We have 3 years of DJ Reed. 3-4 with Arnold. 2-3 with Rake. Amik for another year. It isn’t like it is a bad setup for longer term success for the next few seasons. But the cycling will need to continue.

Can’t worry about those things that can’t be controlled.
We know that the Lions have special players in Kerby & Branch. The jury is still out on TA & Rake.
This is why a DB will be drafted every year.
There should always be quality developmental players in the pipeline.
